It's also about displacement, distance you can move weight away from the pivot points.... two big discs on the barrel, or a gob hanging out off the muzzle, either one do a whole lot more than just screwing a couple equal weight nuts onto the barrel.Or, one of my old tuners from back in the late 80's is threaded straight thru, split with clamp screws. ie you can keep the whole thing on the barrel, or hang 'er off the end. Two completely different animals to mess with.

Ya, my mistake
I sat beside the one Goodling tuner all weekend but not the other. I noticed it on the 100 yd segment but didn't actually look again all weekend. I stand corrected. Most people shoot one rifle all weekend unless they are shooting multi classes but not all.

I once saw
a 52 Winchester with 37 lbs of barrel weight on the end of it for a tuner. Straight 1.25 inch barrel. He holds an indoor record with it still but it is a bear to shoot. I shot it once and he told me not to touch anything but the trigger or it would throw the shot.He was right.

Same is true of a lot of things....... key is, "experience" which all you'se in this thread have.
I also noticed...
I have never tried any CF tuner other then the Ezell, so I won't comment on other types/brands.
But I am 100% confident in Mike's tuner in both it's function and repeatability!
Especially after I stopped worrying about why/how they worked and just accepted the fact that they DO work!
Mike's tuners are on both of my rifles (barrels actually, same rifle) that just won the 3 & 4 Gun Calif State Championship.
They were also on Steve Epstein's rifles that finished 3rd in both the 3 & 4 Gun Aggs. Steve also won the UNL Grand with his HV bag gun.
My base setting worked well in the AM, I went in half a line in the afternoon both days, by that time
conditions picked up to the point that any change was probably lost in the noise but going in a little (emphasis on little!) as it warms up seems to control any vertical.
I also installed them on both our 30BR VFS rifles and they are even easier to tune then the 6PPC, and they shoot dots!
I am now at the point where I wouldnt want to shoot a benchrest rifle without one installed, they work that well!
Especially since I'm one of those guys who preloads. (Yea I know, you can't do that and be competitive.)
Just my experience based on my results, past success is no guarantee of future gains.

Tuners, generally, work. I have experienced it myself on a number of different rifles. I shoot primary, 10 pound HBR rifles so the weight of tuners becomes a big issue. It is very difficult to keep a HBR rifle inside the 10 LB limit. As I said, I've seen a number of tuners work from the BOSS system to any any manor of home made or commercially made tuner, all of them work. What was missing for years was the knowledge of how to make them work effectively I believe.
I've spent the past 6 years in the Rimfire Benchrest world. Tuners are a big part of that world except for Sporters which are tuned when the barrel is installed with a built in lump of metal on the muzzle, if you don't know all of this. Harrell's is the primary tuner in that game, others work but Harrell sort of got there first I guess.
