I have an old 40XBR action - use it for 6,5x47 Lapua?

I have an old 40XBR action that shoots pretty well. Bolt face is able to handle the 6.5x47 Lapua brass, however will the action itself be strong enough to handle the pressures? This action was originally made for .222 I think and was new back in the 70's.

The idea is to build something for 600-1000 yards.

Openning up the bolt face,, (which was obviously done), if performed to duplicate the larger factory dimensions, will in no way weaken the action.

Keep in mind, the Rem 700 familly, which the 40x is part of, is chambered for everything from the 221 fireball to the 338 Ultra Mag.

Thanks.

This is of course a short action, so that would of course be the limitation on the cartridge.

However, even for a 6.5x47 Lapua would it be OK to just glue in the action so that I can skip the recoil lug?

If you glue in the action, you'll need to drill holes in the side of the stock so that you can remove the trigger pins. This was commonly done back when 40XBR's were used in benchrest competition. Trigger hangers have also been built for them in the past so that the trigger can be removed from the bottom. I'd suggest pillar bedding it into the stock and using the recoil lug. If the lug is pinned, the barrel can be removed and replaced without taking the action out of the stock provided that the freefloat on the barrel has enough clearance to allow it.
