Hickory Ground Hog Shoot April 5th

Gary,

Didn't Larry state that the Savage precision varmenters and the F-Class guns would probably not be allowed in the factory class next year? I thought Larry said that they were going to be considered as custom shop guns.

Brian Moore

Brian, a article in Precision Shooting a few months back stated that the Savage was a custom shop rifle. So first thing Monday mourning Larry called one of his distiribitors to see what it took to get one, they had several in stock. I ordered a 22-250 with a 1 in 9 twist barrel, it will be at Bull's Eye thursday. They are not a special order gun so it looks like they are in the factory class to stay. None the less you shot great and still will be the man to beat in the years to come.

Good shooting Brian.

I'm wondering why an F-class gun would even be remotely considered "factory'?? Isn't an F-class gun just a benchrest rifle shot from the prone from a rest on the ground??? I know some F-class guns have Rem 700 actions. But the actions are trued, the barrels and stocks are custom. How would this be "factory"?

I never said the Savages were custom shop guns I was only repeating what Larry had stated. I hope everyone goes out and buys a factory gun and goes to Vale next year ready to win. I would like to see the the number of competitors return to the levels when I started shooting this match 5 years ago. It could happen again, it only took 27 years to do it the first time with a factory rifle. I'll have to admit I made a error in judgement on my 500 yd target and it cost me the overall win. I held low for the 1st shot and it went low...go figure. The other 2 shots had less than .100" of paper between them. I'm not taking anything from the factory guns but the conditions were very good for shooting the light bullets. If the wind blows next year as it usually does the guys with the non-VLD bullets will really have to have a gold horseshoe stuck somewhere to have many points at 500 yds. This is meerly fact that is supported by years of match results.

That's the key to these new savage guns they will shoot high bc bullets.I took first in factory and first in the limited open at the varmit hunters jamboree in south dokota. All with a factory gun. Vale NC has never seen winds like south dokota. Vale ground hog shoot is all about team shooting. They ride these these 6br's back to back no one ever does the factory guns this way. I had a good team I give all the credit to the man who set the gun up for me who I shot behind. We may never do it again but we can say we are the only ones that has ever done it in 28 years .

Brian, you did hear Larry say that, I have heard him say it too. But the reason it was said was because of the article in P.S. magazine. But after calling two distribiters and both having them in stock you can't hardly call them custom. I don't think you will see any more factory rifles there next then you did this year. You can lay a Savage or any other fac. rifle next to yours and you better believe I am gonna bet on yours and I will be money ahead at the end of the day!!!!!!! But one thing for sure he won it all and there is a good possibility that he will be the only person to ever do it. Bring your rimfire with you to piedmont Saturday and swing by Bull's Eye the match starts a 3o'clock.

See ya soon, Gary

There were 193 entries on the board. Course some of the shooters shot factory and custom together. The post above that said 150 custom and 30 factory should be the count.

It rained on and off all day. Guess that is why the attendance was down some. Larry and the girls had plenty of tents up though.

I ate some really good home made chocolate cake.

Thanks all!!!

Jerry, Maggie makes a mean chocolate cake don't she!!!!!!!!! Thats my exscuse, my sugar was so high I could'nt see the targets. My buddy Bill said you have been helping him with his 22-250.

Gary

I'm was just wondering if I brought this factory savage .223 to a ibs 600yd match what kind of .agg do ya'll think it would stoot.I had thought about going to one.

JHunt

bring your gun to Piedmont Saturday, and find out what it will do. I think you might do very well. Oh yea, we are giving $1000.00 dollars to the first shooter who shoots a five shot group that measures .500 or less at Piedmont in a registered IBS 600 yard match. PS That was some good shooting at Vale.
Congradulations.

Bill's got a good looking 22/250 and he will have it shooting shortly. This was its first trip to the range and the first reloads. He's off to a good start with it.

Now lets talk about Maggie's chocolate cake!!! Yum, yum!!

Team Shooting

JHunt,

I hear what you are saying. I did not shoot my targets as a team with anyone if that sheds any light on what I have stated. I have shot the match teamed up with someone in the past but decided to try and win the match on my own this year. I was also 5th in open class with a score of 85 (poor 300 yd target) and I loaned Joel Kendrick my spare gun which he shot a total of 8 shots before the match and he was 4th with a score of 86. The thing I am more proud than how I placed is that I fit and chambered all the barrels on my guns and/or built the rifle myself.

Hey Jason, Is your rifle a sigle shot or box magazine?????????? Gary

Brian,

I would like to thank you for the use of you spare gun last Saturday, had a great time and the gun shot great, if only I would have done my part a little better.
BTY give me a call, I do not know if I can afford to pay the rent?

Larry put on a great match as always, thanks.

See Ya,
Joel Kendrick

Does anyone have a comprehensive list of the scoreboard. Just curious where everyone ended up.
