Herrell's powder despenser

My question is: What are the set screws on the end of the Herrell's powder measure adjustment knob?
I started a new #8 lb. of VV 135 and had to turn the knob 2 more clikes open to get the weight I wanted?
Any advice or comments would sure be appreciated!
I thought that the set screws were a fine adjustment? I didn't touch them!

I would

talk to Lynwood before messing with those screws. When you said 2 clicks, did you mean 2 (of the 6 clicks) between numbers or 2 full numbers. It is not unusual to get a variance bertween different lots of powder. 2 full numbers would be 1.2 grains and that would be alot. 2 clicks (2 of the 6 clicks between numbers) would only be .2 gr and that would almost be expected. I had to recalibrate my Harrells when I changed lots of 133 so I simply reconstructed the excel program for the harrell measure. It worked fine. I have included the Excel program in case you do not have it. Simply adjust the numbers you need. Print the puppy out and tape it right to the bottle.

Hope this helps

Harrels powder measure

Some have four screws. Mine has six. On the six, you have six clicks to one grain

A little terminology ....
Somewhat counter intuitively, a click is the interval from one number to the next on a Culver conversion style ( which the Harrell's is) powder measure. I believe that the earliest measures of this type only had one detent between numbers. These could only be set at say, 47, 47 1/2, 48, etc. clicks. The Harrell powder measure that I have can be set up to have either 4 or six divisions between numbers. The screws that you referred to are used to create either of these options. I got detailed instructions on how to do this with my measure.

With 6 divisions between the numbers (clicks) each is worth a little less than .1 grain with 133 (.09??) I like having mine set up this way. In my notes, I list the settings between 54 and 55 as 54 1/6, 54 1/3, 54 1/2, and
54 5/6.

Although the fineness of the divisions are a good thing, they have no effect on the accuracy of the measure. That is a function of granule size, and operator technique.

As a practical matter, I find that 133 ,and VV powders of similar grain size, to be the coarsest powders that I will throw directly into cases. It took a long time to come up with a technique to do it, but I can now throw these powders to +- .1 grain.

I have recently bought a small digital scale too verify the weight of measure settings because I am aware that ambient conditions can change the weight of a given volume of powder. Whether holding weight constant when loading at a given temperature/ humidity is the way to go has yet to be verified. That will take some time. If anyone has data on this I would be interested.

Boyd;
I stand corrected. Actually, I know better and didn't have my head in the right place. I should have said...it gives you more adjustment for your load.

My herrell's has 6 detents between numbers on the dial. Thanks to everyone for there comments I understand better now! I still don't think I will mess with them. Thanks again!

Be careful if you take them screws out. There are springs and little ball bearings in there. Don't want to lose them. I played with differenet set ups on the Harrell's and like the 4-click to whole numbers. Just me.
