Heavy 10 Thrust Bearing

From what I can see from working on my 10L I have to agree with you Pete. I adjusted the end play out of my lathe with the fiber washer and ran my lathe a while just to run it after I tightened the bearing caps.

The new bearing came in the mail Friday I installed it today and again I adjusted the end play to zero, without cutting anything before and after I cannot see any difference in the way it turns.

I think this bearing is better than any three piece bearing could ever be. I don't know what this bearing is made to fit but its almost perfect for this application.

Pete is right there is really know need or anything gained by using the rolling bearing over the flat washer. I have rebuilt and help rebuild over six south bend lathes both Heavy 10 (10L) and 9'" and have never replaced the flat washer but once and then replaced it with a n.o.s flat washer from Ted Pflugner. The only reason I have to replace the one I did is because it was cracked and the brass pin was missing looked like some had a hard time removing it.

PS. Ted was the parts manager for south bend lathe and still has a lot of n.o.s. parts.

I talked to Ted last week, his 10L parts inventory is running low. I hate to hear that. It wasn't long ago he had enough new/old stock to build a new heavy 10, I wish I had one of them.

The Fiber Washer at the rear end of the Heavy 10 is not really a thrust bearing it is just a fiber washer between the head stock casting and the take up nut. The thrust bearing is under the rear head stock cover and it is a three piece heavy duty thrust ball bearing type. The fiber washer is self lubing from the spindle oil and will never wear out as it should never really touch the head stock casting just a very light film of oil just like the bronze spindle bearing do.

Chet is correct...... We`ve used one for 35 yrs. ( used when we bought it ) in a semi-production type environment...sometimes 2 shifts.....no problems what so ever....no mods ever needed.....
