Headspace Problem ?????

I bought a used Remington 722 in cal. 6MM Remington at a gun show. It had been restocked, reblued, hinged floorplate added , and quite possibly re bolted. I suspect a bolt problem because with factory ammo the bolt closes only by applying a abnormal amount of force, the same rounds smoothly chamber in my other Remington 6mm rifle. Is there anything that I can do myself to gain a thousandth or two of clearance so that the bolt closes more easily ?

If you want to use Factory Ammo, nothing short of modifying something will cure this..
If It was mine, I could just chuck the bolt up true and skin a few thousanths from the bolt face, maybe a couple from the back of the lugs so as to not remove too much metal from one spot. Not much diffewrent than truing a bolt, only doing it for a different reason.
Look at the bolt face real close, and make sure there is not some kind of burr, or anything that would cause interferrance between the bolt face and the face of the case.
Of course, if you choose to shoot handloads, you can just run the cases into a full length die and bump the shoulder back. This might require grinding just a little from the base of the die, or the shell holder. But it will solve the problem.....jackie

If the bolt matches the receiver (check S/N as mentioned earlier) you might just want to try a different brand or lot of factory ammo, if you don't want to load your own. If the numbers don't match......there could be other clearance issues that could be unsafe.......have it checked out by a gunsmith.

One other quick thing to check, make sure the ejector pushes flush or slightly below the bolt face.

hard closing bolt

I have not fired the rifle yet, not knowing if anything was not safe. I will do so and get back. I also have a set of RCBS 6mm reloading dies coming and will try the suggested tip on pushing the shoulder back slightly.
thanks guys for your input.
