How come

You guys don't offer a 6 power class? I noticed that at least three of you shoot six power sometimes.

Six power classes...

Pete,

We just don't have many shooters who are interested in a six power class. There's never been a Varmint Hunter gun shot on our range. We occasionally get a Hunter Rifle but it's been at least two or three years since we actually had three shooters to make a class.

We don't (never have) award prizes for any class that has less than three shooters.

There are usually about 40% Factory Rifle shooters. Obviously that wasn't the case today.

I know Francis, Paul and Larry all have shot some 6 power in the past, they can't shoot if it isn't offered.

It's offered...

You can shoot any benchrest gun you want in our matches. No one with a real bench gun has ever been turned away. However, should you show up with a Varmint Hunter gun and shoot it, you will undoubtedly be the only one in the class. That's fine with us, your targets will be scored and the scores reported, but you are not going to go home with any trophy cause you didn't beat nobody.

It seems that there are folks out there who want prizes for just showing up. Our match committee takes a dim view of this sort of thing. The competition in our main classes is friendly but quite fierce and, should you win, you have really won something that actually means something.

I don't think the Becigneuls have ever shot their Hunter Rifles at our matches. I might be mistaken. I do know that they shoot in Iowa and places that stress that discipline.

Almost all our shooters shoot both group and score and you can do just about everything with one 10-1/2 lb. 6PPC.

Tricky Day

Thanks for getting the results posted so quickly Al. Your computer skills have been a great asset to our events.
We saw it all today. Thick clouds to bright sun and then back to overcast. Dead calm to serious wind. Kept us on our toes
Thanks to all the shooters that traveled to Harrison and helped support our sport and congratulations to all that participated.
Nice shooting Larry and Brian...

Mike

a Simple One

Just to make this simple. Anyone that comes to the Harrison matches is welcome to bring any rifle that qualifies for a Benchrest class and are welcome to shoot and compete. However, we must have three shooters in a class to win an award. We will be glad to post your score in the class but without three competitors there is no money award or the much sought after hat pin.
WE have just never had that many shooters show up with Hunter Class guns.

Mike

I look at it as practice.

I don't care if there are awards of any kind. I just like to shoot under match conditions and try to achieve a personal best. Last year David Halblum introduced the Two Gun to the Bud. Because of that, there are two more HBR shooters here in New England and both of them found that they were pretty good at it. Without the oportunity and challenge neither of them would be shooting Hunter rifles.

I only wish more venuse would offer the oportunity. If competitors look at it as some good practice and trying to achieve a personal best then there could be some positive results. When I go to a shooting event I want to shoot as much as I can. This is why I always shoot two rifles and of late have been shooting both VFS and HBR. I need the practice for the 2 gun. I don't see the number of shooters as having anything to do with my trying to achieve a personal best.

Self Improvement

Couldn't agree with you more Pete. That is why we allow anyone to shoot a Benchrest Class rifle at our events. They know going in if they are in a position to shoot for the loot or if there are not enough competitors in the class. Most of us do it to shoot against ourselves.

Mike

One occasion we recruited Mike Swartz to come up from Indiana as well and shoot hunter class. During the week before the match, mike had a scope problem, he still came, but if i remember correctly he brought a VFS rifle.

Good shooting - Nice Scores!

I don't know how many ways to say this...

Petey, you are more than welcome to come and shoot your Hunter gun. You can also shoot VFS with another gun if you want. No problem.

We also allow you to shoot your Hunter gun against the VFS guns. If you declare you want to, should you beat all the VFS guns, you would get the winner's prizes. Should there be two other shooters in Hunter class, then the winner would get exactly the same prizes awarded to the VFS winner.

Last year Jeff Aberegg shot three guns in most all our matches.

We just don't award prizes to classes with one or two shooters. Match winners get the clap, a new $10.00 bill, a great match winner pin and the opportunity to buy at McFarland's after the match. Whut more kin ya ask for?

Why are you so focused on the awards? After one spends hundreds and thousands on the equipment with which to compete, a Ten is almost an insult.

My origional question was simply out of curiosity. Why don't you offer a particular class? It appears obvious that you don't want to; simple enough. I certainly wouldn't feel right taking one of your VFS awards shooting a 6 power rifle; wouldn't want to discourage you that severely.

This is a pointless discussion. You want the last word so I yield to it. ;)

Pete, Pete, Pete,

Let me have the last word. This has been explained by at least two other people and seems simple to understand. We do offer the Hunter Class. If three people show up with that class of gun we offer class prizes. Just like any other class. No benchrest class gun is ever turned away.We have a very friendly atmosphere at our range and everyone has a good time. That's what it is all about...

Mike

Pete,

I'll tell you what. You come to Michigan to shoot hunter, or Varmint hunter, let me and Francis know ahead of time. We'll be there so there will be at least three... Better yet we'll contact Dudley, and Mike Swartz, so maybe 5 would have hunter rifles. But honestly that would probably be about it, there just aren't that many of us that enjoy the challenge of the 6x scope.

Paul

Au Contraire...

I LOVE six power scopes... I have a Sawrovski 6X one of my two deer rifles and Glorya has a Kahles 6X on her's.

I DON'T LOVE people who show up at a match with a rifle that is the only one in it's class and who accuse us of "not offering" that class because he didn't get a hunk of wood for beating nobody. I'd much rather win ten bucks for beating everybody else than a meaningless hunk of wood for beating no one.

As I recall this is the same person who, a couple of years ago, wanted prizes in the same dollar amounts for benchrest as are awarded for winning NASCAR races.
