Can anyone give me any tips to accurizing a H&R M12. I've gone through 2 of them and they don't really shoot as good as I hoped. I have a couple of Anschutz 54's and Rem 40-x's and these shoot very good. The H&R looks and feels like it should not be as finicky as it is. Do I need to change the barrel, rechamber, recrown or just glue it in the stock. The bore is good. I had it checked with a borescope. I really would like to make the rifle shoot. I have a barrel from another 40-x that I converted to a 7.5lbs sporter. I thought about getting that one installed on the H&R because I know it shoots or at least it used to on the 40-x before I took it off.

Thanks

I bought one

New in the box from CMP a dozen or more years ago and the only thing I could get to shoot in that one was high speed ammo. It would not shoot slow stuff. Could this be the twist rate causing them not to shoot slower ammo? Nice looking rifle and it was quite inexpensive; the one I bought, anyway. CMP had pirated the sights from the one I bought but I had planned to use a scope on it anyway.

I never tried the high speed stuff. It shoots Eley Match EPS good but has a bad flier every so often. I've tried several of the "good ammo" but that flier appears consistantly. I never thought about the rate of twist.

Thanks

Have you slugged the barrel? That's the only way to see if you have tight or loose spots in the wrong places.

No, I don't have the equipment to slug it the right way. Those fliers are driving me crazy though.

H&R model 12

Hey Fella,
Those flyers can sure be disheartening. I think we've all been exaperated by shots that fly out for no apparent reason. Regarding the bore on a standard goverment issue heavy barrel H&R model 12. Yeah, those bores are large, at least the ones I've slugged. Which has been at least 3 of them and probably more.
I realize that as is they can shoot ok, but don't expect to drill one on top of the other. I'd replace the barrel with any of the current makers, although I favor Broughton, any quality barrel will be a huge improvement.

Then shoot decent ammo, for plinking the minimum I'd shoot would be wolf match target, but never in a match. In a competition I'd use Eley EPS or Laupa.

The H&R model 12 action is a good quality action and the trigger can be lightened with little effort. In any event keep shooting and use wind flags - good luck.

What Herb Smith told me

Almost all M12's have teaser barrels.

Mine sure does. It will only shoots the Eley Black Box faster lots well. Tested in a rail gun fixture. I have heard these barrels were designed for Federal UM1.

I need to rebarrel mine and bed it to be competitive. It is hard to sink big bucks into a cheap rifle. Eley EPS is not allowed in our game.

Mine still is all original so have I resisted changing it other than Herb's trigger.

I have a friend who wants to buy it so I might sell it.

Thanks for the info guys. I would still appreciate any other opinions out there. Is there any advantage to glueing the stock vs. bedding?

Anyone own a customized H&R 12

Hello All!

I may buy an H&R 12 BR rifle customized with a custom stock and a 5oz trigger.

Anyone own one, and if so, how do they shoot?

Steve

I just sold an M12 and I hope I don't live to regret it. It shot several 250's in IR50/50 competition (250 18X best). The barrel was a Broughton with a Harrel tuner. The stock was a much modified factory piece and the trigger was done by Herb Smith. There have been, and still are, quite a few M12's in this area and all seemed to shoot well. The majority of smith work on these guns was done by Elmer Laitala and Dean Bircher. You might want to get in touch with either of these gentlemen for any work you need, as they have quite a bit of experience with M12's.

;)bohunk (Dave ?) is this the one I purchased ?(Description is identicle) I LIKE it ALOT couldn't be happier :D

I'm PRACTICEING as much as I can. those PESKY Annies and 52's (friends) have been a bit SHY so far this spring :D:D:D BTW I picked up some Club to practice with (saving the GOOD stuff) and without messing with the tuner settings it shoots a 1 1/4 low but almost as tight as the EPS stuff (close enough to wonder if it's ME ). I do hope to make it to a match or two this summer.

A problem using other ammo for practice, unless it is proven, cause one to always question if it was them or the ammo. I think it better to practrice less with the same ammo you are using in matches. If you have been at benchrest for awhile, I think, using uncertain ammo is or can be a terrible tease. I think it worth the price of admition to use the good stuff SPARINGLY.

Pete, I agree and I do (sparingly ) use the EPS. I'm still working on my Bench ritual/technique. Rimfire is TOUGH in that respect FOR ME at least. Because of the size/weight difference of my centerfire rifles, the 22rf seems twitchey in the bags (also a fit issue, rear bag/rest 1st on my list). I'll be picking brains on that issue soon. But this M 12 SHOOTS (better than I do). My friend with the Annie (2013 I believe ) has bettered Daves X count by 3 useing the M 12(my best has been 15 so far)in our informal matches.
