Galveston, Bolivar, south East Tx, and south western Louisiana incurred major catastrofic damage. Extensive damage was do to a 60 mile wide eye coupled with a 12-15' storm surge. Bolivar looks as if it was nuked..... 60+ peaple perished that refused to evacuate the affected areas. Many, many more still unaccounted for. Look for the death toll to go up after they search the millions of tons of storm debris.

The rest of the Houston Metro area lost roofs, fences, s/r damage, trees down etc, etc......

4 million + without power in 90 degree heat for weeks on end. I really don't know how peaple got along here before A/C.

Jackie's roof is fixed and is doing fine. He ran our last club VFS match this
past Sunday.

Maybe Jackie will chime in and give his account of Ike......

+1 what smitty said. No power for 12 days at my place. I didn't realize how much beer it takes to live without AC.................!!

Things are about back to normal, everybody I know has electricity, there are still big piles of rubble everywhere, but in a week or so, those will be gone as well.

I went down to a shipyard in Texas City this morning, and drove back up HyWay 146, which runs the coast up through Kemah, where many of the large Marinas are located.. It is still a mess. Boats piled up like logs in a log jam, restaurants and shops with big piles of torn out insides to buildings piled out front. But most of the signs say, "openning soon".

That is the way things are. You live here, you learn to take the good with the bad. Heck, Caifornia has Earth Quakes, and in some places up North it gets so darn cold you just about have to hibernate to survive.

Down here, we have mild Winters, great Springs and Fall, the summers are hot and humid, but you get used to it.

We have to put up with a Hurricane ever so often. It could be worse........jackie

....you gotta better attitude towards them than I do.

Dolly knocked out power for 26 hours and my wife and kids acted like the rapture was here with no A/C!! I told her the next time she & the kids will be going to San Antonio to stay with my sister. She says we need one of those big back up generators to run everything in the house?? We dated for 10 years and been married 12 and NOW we need one??

I went to go help a friend cut down a big ash tree off his house the next day and we got a little crack in one window but that was it.

Ike would have really hurt us....we were just saturated from Dolly then weeks of rain almost every day. I've been buying flood ins. for the past 3 years which I used to not worry about.

I agree though...will take the hurricane over what other areas of the nation have to deal with.

Making progress here in NW Houston. The debris removal guys are in my neighborhood right now, so that is good.

New roof goes on the house end of next week, and now I am just dealing with the remodeling contractors as I have some walls and ceilings needing replaced.

I lost no trees, and only was without power for three days. It could be worse, though, that's for sure. We were lucky compared with many...

I can only imagine what you guys went through down there....heck...here in S. Indiana, we got 80 mph winds from it and that tore up quite a bit and some places went a week or so without electric. FEMA and others must be doing a fairly good job....haven't seen them bashed in the news for a while.

Fema did OK, it took Mayor White going down to one of the gathering sites and using some rather harsh language, (for a polititian), to get things really rolling. People were appaledthat the Mayorknewsuch words, but it seems the job got done.

There will always be those who will complain, saying, "it's been 2 hours since the storm hit, how come some one hasn't GIVEN me something yet".

These leeches get in the way of those that really need help, and are grateful for anything, and everything........jackie

Fema...

...really put in some strong restrictions on new construction along the coast. Many will not be able to rebuild where they want.

Have a buddy who I fish with out of Port Masfield and his Dad was designing / building a new 3500sq ft home.

After katrina his foundation cost doubled.....it was amazing. A while back, We went to go check on the progress after a bay trip and his Dad was there shaking his head. Only the beams / foundation & concrete stilts were up. He said that alone was Like +/-$350,000.00

I forget how deep he said they had to go into the ground & I think he even mentioned a uni-poor?? He lost count of how many trucks came. I'll have to ask him if he remembers the yards.

My stubborn fishing partner stayed in that house during Dolly!! Said he was worried about the offshore boat as he could not find a trailer big enough to get her out. Got lucky and everything was OK.

Well, it's good to hear things are going in the right direction. Heck, these people you talk about wanting handouts so quick, I would like to know where most of them are from. I know up here during tornados, etc...it seems a lot of those trying to get the instance handouts don't even live in the area, they just wait for the storm to pass, find out where the distribution centers are...because they still have power and tv, then go there claiming their in need. Scum...
