Hi guys, I recently aquired a rifle that shoot horizontal groups all holes touching. I can't remember where i heard it but it was something like vertical groups could be stock or bedding related while horizontal (such as what this rifle has occuring) could be scope or parrallax related. Is this a correct diagnoses or just something floating around that someone made up??? Thanks in advance.

Vertical stringing is caused by "not enough powder". Not sure why its never too much powder - everyone habitually always goes up.

This may not apply to you but in my personal case.....

Horizontal stringing is caused by "not enough brains"....causing me to always mumble to myself ..."watch the windflags dummy"

Good post. A Rifle with a fire controle system that is acting up will shoot just bad enough to make you want to take up bowling.

This would be a good time to warn shooters who have actions that feature the firing pin that screws into the cocking piece to periodically check the tiny set screwsthat lock it, and the firing pin protrusion. I used to have a SV Bat on my Rail Gun that did indeed come loose.

I re-assembled it in the correct position with a little JB Weld on the firing pin threads.Sounds a little extreme, but never had any trouble after that.

On my Farleys, I credit Gene Bukys for finally getting mine right, mainly with his non metalic shroud.........jackie

Horizontal stringing is the worst possible out of tune that I know of. As Lou said it is possible that you have poor ignition or it can also be seating depth and it just is possible your barrel just does not like something in your load combination. Try different powder first and then bullets.
Bryan, I am not Jackie but I believe firing pin protrusion on most actions should be in the .050-.060 range on most center fire actions.
