Greetings From "Ike's Former Home", Houston

We have a long extension chord running from one our building that has power to our Office, so we got our Shop's Computer up and running.

About the best thing I can say about things at the moment is that the toilets are flushing, and if you have a gas home, (or a generator), you can take a hot shower.

I live in what they are calling the "blue zone", all they can tell us about our power is "after Monday". I would say that about 30 percent of the Metro Houston Area now has power.

Down South on the coast, (Galveston, Bolivar,), they are trying to get everybody off. The place is, as the Mayor of Galveston sayed, '"unihabitol".

I thoght I was ok as far as major damege goes. I have a huge Oak Tree in my backyard that developed about a 6 foot crack, running straight up the trunk, sometime Sat Night when the storm was raging, I managed to get to my shop and get five big Ratchet Straps, I more or less put a "girdle" around the trunk. Before I did this, I could see the crack open about 1/2 inch when those 90 mph gust would come through. I saved the tree from falling on my house.

But, yesterday, we had a professional tree crew come out to take the tree down, starting at the top. Well, at about 6pm yesterday, we were all cooking out on my driveway, and that tree crew was working. Suddenly, one of their support lines snapped, and the largest limb on the tree came crashing down on the back room of my house.

I now have a Sun Roof. I told the crew foreman, "heck, I could have done that". They are trying to repair the decking and lay in some shingles so rain can't get in, I will deal with the rest after things get back to normal. I acted civil, but in reality, I wanted to throw up.

I have been furnishing four of my neighbors with electricity from my Motohome's big Diesel generator. It at least keeps the 'fridges running and maybe a fan. The generator is running at about 60 percent, is burning a little over 1/2 gallon per hour. At least I have my satellite TV in the Motorhome.

Most of the other shooters from our area are in about in the same shape as I, Lots of debri, no power, trying to get back to normal.

I haven't tried one of those MRE's that FEMA is handing out. I here they are pretty good. They have big FEMA "PODS" set up through out the area, furnishing ice, MREs, and essentials. That is all many people have, so all in all, I guess many of us are pretty fortunate.......jackie

Thanks for the update

Glad to hear you are doing as well as you are. Has anyone heard from Buckys, Robert Whitewood or Estes. I fear they were hit pretty hard.

Jerry

Gene had a bunch of trees come down, he is OK, I doubt he will get power any time soon. He is also living in his Motor Home.

I haven't been able to get in touch with Bob Estes. Winnie is bwtween us and Beaumont, they got hammered really hard, as they were on the 'dirty side'. The eye of the storm actually came over my house, so where Bob lives was in the worst spot you could be.

Gary Walters up in Conroe is in about the same shape as I am, just a mess up there. The Storm went right smack over them as well, still with 90+ mph winds.

If I hear from others, I will let you know.,.......jackie

Jackie,
Glad to hear things are ok. Watch them MRE's, I have ate enough of them in my life. Every case (12) of MRE's have two Koshier meals in them and probably a Vegitarian. STAY AWAY from them if you ever want your life to be normal again...I swear...one bite and nothing will ever taste the same again and that's not for the better   Also, if you black tank or septic for the house has a problem. Have everyone eat one packet....and I repeat...ONLY ONE PACKET of the peanut butter (you can use the crackers to) out of the MRE. That will give you at least two or three days to get the black dumped or the septic working :D :D

We had 75MPH winds here in southern Indiana and had eight people killed. Still picking up limbs and cutting up trees here. Some areas without power still here. At least my cows are still in and not out on vacation somewhere.

Good Luck on getting things back to normal and that goes for all effected.

Robert Whitewood is up near us during the storm. Said his house is OK. He will go back in a couple weeks. Bob Estes said he lost a few shingles and a little water damage. Said the worst part was standing in long lines for gas for the generator.

Ok!

Jackie: how is the fuel situation. Do you need me to bring you some? Any thing I can do to help? Jim Casey De funiak Springs, Fl

Jim

If you are willing to bring me 100 gallons of Diesel all the way from Florida, I will swap you 10 MRE's, and all the firewood you want.:D

Seriously, there is not a shortage of gas. The problem is the stations do not have electricity to power the pumps. Long lines, (maybe an hours wait), are the norm at stations that have power. That will be getting better pretty quick........jackie

I am glad you and the rest are surviving.
It is great that you were prepared.
I am sorry I didn't get down there to check on you after the storm but I stayed at Camp Mabry for this one.
I second hovis on the MREs. They can really plug you up if you don't stay hydrated.
The new Pot Roast is pretty good, but stay away from the Tuna with Noodles.
the Noodles get real chalky.

Jackie ...

Glad to hear everyone is safe. Material things can be replaced. Make sure you DRINK PLENTY OF WATER with the MREs. They act like an internal glue if you don't. Take care! Art

Glad all

you folks made it through the storm unharmed. That is something I hope I never have to endure, hoping something will still be standing when all is said and done.

Good luck getting life back to normal and above all STAY SAFE in doing so.

I feel pretty pathetic when I am starting to complain about our COLD WINTERS here in Manitoba. The worst that we have to worry about is POSSIBLY the odd summer tornado which is nothing compared to what usually hits the alley. Heck people even run outside to watch them instead of running the other way.

Again good luck to all.

The Jambayla MRE's are really good

I had quite a bit of experience with them 3 years ago myself.

I wish you godspeed recovering from this.

Been there, done that.

I feel better

Glad to be able to come back for a visit to Benchrest.com. I want to forget Ike. I am so tired. I have my yard looking like it did before Ike came for a visit. Can't wait to get out and shoot again. Looking forward to the Rachael's Glen Match in October.

Hope everyone is okay...............GW

Emergency! Call fema!

Jackie, I am glad you did not get more damage. Did your roofers work for the government? We in Ft. Worth escaped Ike totally. That does not mean we are not suffering. I injured a hangnail picking up a twig that fell off of one of my trees. A light bulb blew out in the living room and had to be replaced. Its enough to make you weep. Tim

storms...

Jackie...

Glad you all made it through with no more trouble than you have.

Prayers sent your way for all the people displaced and having trouble not man made.
