Got PPC want 308 "tactical" or ??????

Thanks Sarge. Good information, I appreciate it. I don't think I'm interested in the 300WM..........just too powerful for my needs. I believe my range time will only rarely be even out to 300 yards - probably 95% will be at the regular 100 yard range. I want a 308 mainly to "experience" it and have one in the gun locker. The 10FP and 700 equivalent are near the top off my want list. I am a Savage fan, so will probably go the Savage route.......either get the 10fp and change the stock fairly quickly or get the one with the McMillan stock.....unsure. I've replaced stocks on several rifles and enjoy the work. Usually I choose a Richard laminated and work it into a thing of beauty (if I say so myself!).

So, I'm still trying to figure out which way to go now......I have not given up on the thought of getting a nice 22LR also, something along the line of a the less exotic Anschutzs. I want a single shot. I use a CZ Varmint 22LR in a Richards' stock and it's fun and accurate, but I will probably give that to my grandson soon.

I need to talk to Bob White about selling or trading my 6mmPPC (and maybe my 6mmBR and 22BR). While I enjoy shooting those rifles, I don't do it as much as I used to, and loading the rounds is something I think you have to do on a regular basis to produce good accuracy.

Here is a thought. Pick up a Remington Varmint Special in any .308 bolt face caliber, and have it rebarreled, with a Krieger barrel in 6.5 x 47. Pillar bed it yourself. This should give you a mild recoiling, accurate rifle that has a long barrel life, with good "reach" and wind drift characteristics. As to a Remington 700 being a MOA rifle, all of mine (mostly varmint calibers) have tuned up to much better than that.

Thanks, I will look into the 6.5 x 47, but I'm wanting to avoid as much as possible the really "benchrest" calibers that require a lot of case work. That's why I'm selling my PPC and perhaps also my BR rifles.

What, you don't want to reload? 6.5X47L brass is perty persnickety right out of the box..... can't see why you'd have any "work" involved.

Paper sniper I have a .308 I like to shoot. I also have MS and Arthritis and its progressing fast. The .308 does kick 2yrs ago 40 rounds would make my back and shoulder blade ache for a week or so. Have a 1/2 in recoil pad and a shoulder elastic recoil pad. The heavier bullets are rough to shoot. 125gr 130gr and 150gr with reduced loads are nice enough and I really like the big bore .308. I have a Howa Nice action not the best trigger so I added a Rifle Basics 1 1/2# trigger. Added a custom stock and handloads. Its a 1x12 Twist barrel nice with the lighter bullets. Only Drawbacks metric threads and few custom parts.

Gun shoots very well if I could heal from Sciatica damaged hip etc. to go shoot it. MS and arthritis make this a slow if non existant process.

Savages are nice for the price accutrigger simple cheap design with good pull for a factory trigger. Barrels are self changeable and there are aftermarket accessories for them. Factory configurations of stocks barrels and triggers are best around.

Remington Most have the best fit and finish and most accessories of any factory rifle. For a custom rifle jewell 2oz trigger benchrest stock etc. Gunsmithed chambered barrel this is the mild Custom choice.

Beyond this your Custom action and stock rebarreled is the route to go.

Not that I don't want to reload, as I have been reloading 223 Rem and 40 S&W, both of which I shoot on a more regular basis. But components for those are comparatively plentiful, and loaded cartridges can always be found if I decide to go that route.

No, I just would prefer the option of not having to reload, especially on the more esoteric cartridges. With the 40 S&W and 223, I can get good prices on once fired brass.......the price on new brass scares me! I checked the other day and it's risen a LOT since I purchased my last Lapua 6mmPPC several years ago.

Thanks for that info, and I hope you can get out there and shoot some soon! I also have a Howa. I bought a Howa 223 Remington heavy barreled action many years ago and put it into a Richards laminiated stock. It is one beautiful rifle! However, like some women it looks better than it performs! :D

My collection has changed some in the last few years heres an old picture of some of my guns.

The .308 if not reloading Federal Gold Medal Match 168gr $40+ a box
try PRVI Partisan .308 168gr match good ammo better prices hard to get now.

My .308 shoots alot better than those targets. Custom loads and mods don't have any targets photographed. Maybe I'll snap some soon to post.

First on the shooting agenda is to resight my ar-15 and my 243.

Thanks for the link sir.

What a great idea. But for some reason I cannot do that. I sent an email to the webmaster but not reply.

Thanks so much for your thoughts.

308

I have a 308 in a Knoxx axiom stock, it turns the kick into a push. It was about half the price before blackhawk bought them but it was worth it. If you don`t like recoil its a great stock.
Duce :)

Why not try a .223 or .22-250 in Rem 700 VLS? They are sub .5in groups with factory ammo. The factory loads are pretty cheap if you don't want to reload. Recoil is subtle with the 10lb rifle and small caliber.

If you ever want to go back to custom you can rebarrel to 6 XC and re-use the .22-250 brass. Add a target trigger and you are in business.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I might be getting a Cooper model 21 in 223. That's sounding pretty good right now. I reload for the 223 already so I should be all set.

The remington SPS tactical is a good buy. It has a 20" barrel, but you will need to restock it. There are MANY stocks available, tune the trigger down to an acceptable level and you're pretty good to go.
Another fine option is the Savage Precision Carbine, it comes in an accustock, which is a tremendous improvement over thier cheap stocks, but if you want to replace the stock, you are SOL, they have a 3 point mount in the stock.

The HOWA varminter series are very nice rifles, the even have a model in the AXIOM stock, they are very reasonably priced and have a reputation for accuracy.

Just don't be disappointed when you can't get those pinhole groups that you got with your 6 ppc. Have you thought about 6.5 grendel? basically a 6.5 PPC but ammo is being made by a couple of companies. It would just be a matter of a rebarrel on your existing action. Black Hills and Wolf both make ammo for it (and others).

Good suggestions. However, I did get the Cooper in 223 Remington. Very nice looking rifle, I am looking forward to developing some loads and shooting it.

Interesting you mention the Howa rifles. I bought one of their "varmint" 223 Remington barreled actions and put it into a nice Boyd's stock and mounted a Weaver T36. It is indeed a fine rifle. Look really good also! Not as accurate as my Savage in that caliber, but close. My complaint is it has a long throat and slow twist barrel, so I think the jump my bullets make keeps it from being more accurate.
