"Frozen" Scopes

A couple years ago there was lots of interest and many posts about "freezing" scopes and using adjustable external mounts. Now that seems to have gone away. Did the external mounts not work? Is there a new technology in BR scopes that makes them better?

Reed,
They work just fine. I think the March scope introduction took most serious benchresters in that direction. I think most are either overtly or subconsciously fearful of external adjust scopes. After all, if internal adjust scopes supplanted Unertl's and Lyman STS's what good are they? JMHO --Greg

I agree the March scope has probably replaced the "frozen" scope concept. Although the external mounts coupled with the frozen scope was a reliable and robust system, the number of folks who were willing to mess with freezing the scopes dwindled down to just a few. It's a lot of work for little profit. But...it sure increased the resale value of the Leupold 36s for a while. But, I think the March scope has become the final answer to the POI problem as well as improvements in the Leupold Competition series. As for the March scope, only time will tell if it is the final answer.

Gene Bukys won the last two world championships (2-gun), multiple Nationals plagues (shot his way into Hall of Fame), Super Shoot and many others using his locked up scopes and external mounts.

Well its sure a lot cheaper to have a frozen scope and external mounts than it is to fork out the money they want for a March.
Is there more than one dealer for March in the US?

no....

Well I am glad they exist. Not happy about the price but then I dont own Boardwalk or Park Place.
At least someone took the time to make a scope that works.

No,
If you want a new March it comes through Kelbly's. As to price, when they came out I thought they were really overpriced but on a advice of a close friend I bought one, within a month I sold everything I could spare to buy another.

Hovis, I am glad you brought that up. Gene has set the standard in Benchrest for the past couple of years using a frozen scope, and I might add, a tuner. He needs to write a book.

I am thinking about going back to my frozen 36 Leupold and Jewel Mounts next season.......jackie

Jackie just out of curiosity why the 36 and not the 45?

Vern, the old Jewell Foster mounts were 1" only. Same with Bukys...I think. Finally there is the Brackney rings which are 30mm only. --greg

Well it appears the mount and rings for my Leupold 45/Bukys conversion fit my 30mm tube on my scope.

If memory serves me correct Gene only works with the Competition 45X which is a 30mm tube. Thus the rings should fit the tube.
