I just finished pillar bedding a 700 varmint bdl. I had planned on changing out the old slotted action screws with B-square socket screws. Oddly enough, the new B-square front screw is only long enough to get only 2.25 revs (threads). I was careful to bed the gun/pillars at the same depth as original and trimmed the pillars about 1/32nd above the original floorplate inlet. The original slotted screw gets about 4 revs. Are my fears much ado about nothing - will 2 threads hold? Just a little uncomfortable with it.

By the way, thanks to everyone for the advice on cutting checkering over the original pressed in dimples. Other than the fact that the checkering is slightly lower than the border, it appears right nice if I do say so myself.

Front action screw

Brownell's sells extra long socket head action screws for the Rem 700.

Yes they do!

Thank you... Didn't show up on my first search. .25 long. thanks again.

Buy yourself a set

of BAt action screws. They have a very DEEEEEEP socket head that will assure one will never "ring it out"; worth the money, they are.

Thanks guys...

Ordered the long screws.

Alinwa... just for your info, they're aware we have grinders. The rear screw was 0.122 longer than original - had to grind it off before the bolt would go in. The front one was nearly a tenth (0.081) short. Of course this was measured against the originals for that particular rifle... Maybe they'd be better selling all threaded screws - 2 per pack - about 2 inches long - and just letting us grind to fit.

Wish the local hardware store had socket heads with a proper head.

Thanks again folks.
