What would the ideal freebore be on a 6PPC reamer with 269 neck???

Would .030 be ideal?? Less or more?? It's a dave Kiff reamer /Pacific

thanks

Tubby, the "ideal" freebore is dependent on two elements. First is the bullet you plan to use, the second element is where you want the base of the bullet you plan to use to sit in the case neck.

Looks like the average version of the PPC drawings I have show a freebore length of 0.06". This would be for using the "average" FB bullet of 65-68 grains and a 7-8 ogive nose with that bullet being made on an 0.810-0.825" long jacket.

Chamber neck diameter has nothing to do with freebore.

Depends on the bullet you plan to use. For the 68 grain boattails made on .825 jackets, use a zero freebore. For 66 to 68 grain flat base bullets with a seven ogive, .045. For a good, all around compromise, you can't beat a .035 freebore. Hope this helps.

Hi all

Many thanks for the quick replies!! Because of availability of bullets on this side of the world, we all shoot Barts Ultra's and Headhunters, 68gr FB.

I have ordered Watsons 68gr FB due to the "lessor" ogive, as the info received from a previous thread, the suggestion was that the Watson/Fowler would do better in my barrel that's reamed with my 269, .060FB reamer.

I would like to try some Boattails as well, maybe Berger's 65gr BT, and Barts new 65gr BT.

Many thanks

I am one of those shooters who believe that Benchrest has got to the point to where you just about have to choose a bullet, and then get the freebore to match.
Over the years, I have shot everything from 7.5 ogive Fowlers to 00 Bruno Boatails.
Back when I shot Fowlers, a .060 freebore seemed ideal. When I went to bullets such as a Barts Ultra, I cut the feebore back to .045, in conjunction with a overall chamber length of 1.510. When I switched to the 00 Bruno Boat Tail 3 years ago, I stayed with the .045 but last year cut the freebore all the way to 'zero", mainly to get the overall affective capacity back to what it was originolly with the Fowlers and the .060 freebore.
I feel I shot my best aggs ever with the 'zero" freebore last year. The overall affective case capacity is where I think it should be, the pressure spike seems to be back toward the chamber where the best agging capability probably lies.
If you are shooting Ultras, go with a .045. For Watsons and Fowlers, (really the same bullet), the .060 might be just right............jackie
