Have been out of ARA matches for a couple of years got back in this year
shooting a 54 anschutz action with a hart barrel with a holden tuner on a
McMillan stock useing eley match eps ammo, I keep getting these flyers that
are a 1/2 inch from point of aim on a calm day, I am useing a weaver 36 scope. Is it me, the ammo or rifle.

Are you using a mag. ? If so try carefuly loading one at a time. And check for damaged bullet tips. Also check your parallax, don't just use the AO 50 yd. mark.

Sounds like ammo to me. Have you tested multiple lot numbers? If not, get a sample pack with at least 4 different lot numbers and test them. I personally test without a tuner on the barrel. Find the lot that shoots the best that way, then put the tuner on and use whatever method you prefer to tune the rifle. GG
 
Part of it could be the ammo, the rifle could be dirty, etc. But a half inch is significant. You don't say if it keeps a nice little round group with the other shots or if there is vertical. My guess it's a combination with the majority of it being you or really your failure to read the condition. It's probably not as calm as you think.
 
Dirty rifle, failure to read conditions, not as calm as he thinks? Man, you are one heck of a detective, but your bedside manner needs some work. :rolleyes:
 
Thank all of you for your replys, have tried different cleaning methods like after 25 rounds per target plus sighters tried 50 rounds then clean but this was two years ago. Tried something different last match got point of aim without touching rifle pull away and watch the flags then touch the trigger
will try some lupa+ ammo tommorow. Thanks again.

More than likely it's the ammo, particulary if the shot is extremely high or low(the usual). 2 years ago I had 2-3 flyers in every box of a certain lot of Eley ammo so I weighed them out and segregated the bullets that deviated extremely from the "average". Then I pulled the bullet and weighed the powder and found that there was a significantly less amount of powder charge in the bullets that deviated from the norm. Try different lots of Eley or Lapua. Good luck.
 
One thing to also look at, If the fliers are vertical a gummy or weak firing spring & pin could be suspect

Sorry, I guess I need some of that Californian attitude.
 
Try some rws R50.If it's the ammo you will see improvement.I never cared much for the Eley.
Do you keep the rifle leveled?Might be the case too.Install a level scope if you don't have one.
Try to shoot indoor to rule out wind faults.

is the tempature very hot? i have noticed that when there is a little wind i can just hold off, but when the wind stops that is when the bullet does crazy things. they normally hit high and to the right. i believe it has to do with the hot air rising up off the ground. when the wind stops i look for the mirrage and see what it is doing. early in the morning when there is dew on the ground i can hold p.o.a. and tha will be p.o.i. but as the day heats up and the ground gets hot i have to start paying attenion to the thermals that rise. just a ideal.

it's not my ammo it's just nature throwing a new curve at me that i'm trying to deal with.
