flash hole deburring

Well, regardless of what it is SUPPOSED to be, I have 500 new 220 Russian cases, (plastic blue box), and just this minute, I opened a fresh box of 100 to see what lurks.

My .0625 drill mounted in a pin vice will go into many of them with no resistance, but others it cuts quite a bit out, just like when they were 1.5mm, or what ever.

I could care less what the official specs say they are, or how they are manufactured. All I know is that they are all not the same exact size......jackie

Jackie, Just for kicks, I emailed a question to Lapua this morning asking what the current manufactured diameter of the 220 Russian flash hole was cut to and received this official response via email a few minutes ago:

"In the 220 Russian, we use the same 1.5mm flash holes as we do in the 6mm BR, 6.5x47mm and the new 308 Palma cases. At present, these are the only ones using the 1.5mm flash holes, with the rest of the line being the standard 2.0mm dimension.

I hope this is helpful to you, but if there's anything else we can do to be of assistance, please don't hesitate to let us know.

Sincerely,

Subject: 6.5 Grendel Flash-Hole Question

Kevin,

I read today that the ONLY Lapua brass with1.5 mm flash holes are:.220 Russian, 6mm BR, 6.5x47mm and the new 308 Palma cases. Doesn't the 6.5 Grendel brass also have a 1.5 mm flash hole? Or, is the 6.5 Grendel brass 2.0 mm?

Thanks for clarifying this issue.

Ryan,

My sincere apologies! The Grendels do indeed have the 1.5mm flash holes. Upon receiving your email, I measured a sample here in the office, and you’re perfectly correct. Consider ME clarified.

Ryan,

For an official proclamation, Mr. Kevin Thomas in Lapua: ksthomas@lapua.us or one of his associates is your best bet for such a request. Good Luck.

Has anyone done a serious group accuracy test on different size flash that are a few thousands above or below the manufacturer"s spec? If not, or if there is no difference in accuracy if there has been one; who the &%%$# cares? Maybe there are some out there who can read conditions well enough to take advantage of a few thousands difference in flash hole size; I certainly can't...and don't know anyone else who can (I don't think). Are you out there???
