First rifle for 600-1000Yd shooting?

I am sorry about my first post, I thought you were looking for a caliber. I am blessed that here in SW Missouri we have a benchrest club. Anyone may attend and shoot matches. I would suggest seeking out a club, meet people and learn. You will find someone who will help you find what you are searching for. At most matches you will find rifles and equipment for sale, maybe not at the range that day, but in someone home. You can find real bargains available, from people who want to advance and will sell a rifle that still shoots even though it may border on high round count. Find someone that will guide you through reloading, buy a gun including brass and dies that match its chamber. The fellowship and mentoring will be more than money can buy. I will let new people shoot my set up any time I am at the range, hoping to find a new shooter, they need to understand the sport. The few moments of pleasure you get pulling the trigger, pale in comparison to the time spent getting ready.

Thanks everyone for all the help.

Any recommended books or reading material on reloading, or any other essentials?

Thanks

I have one more tech question for ya. I see that a .308 is a short action and a 300 mag is a long action. What is the main difference. Also if I went to a .308 what can it be upgraded to down the road for better distance and accuracy or would I just sell that one and buy something else? Is there such thing as a long action 308 to make it easier to upgrade to a 300 or something like a 6br or 6.5 down the road?

Thanks

I don't understand why everyone is yelling 308 win. I understand advising against a high dollar bench rig. Baby steps......but why not go strait to a 6br or 6.5-284 in a factory Savage target rig?? Is there a reason why everyone thinks it would be easier for a new guy to learn on a 308 vs. a 6 br or 6.5-284. He can start with good brass, and brass prep is brass prep....you can take it as far as you want. Same with the load process.... just dump the powder, seat, and shoot, or be a complete anal retentive, like all of us, and weigh and measure EVERYTHING!!! :D I know there will be a learning curve, but he can learn just as fast with a 6br or 6.-284.

Hell, I think it is easier to load for a belted mag.....at least you don't need to worry about head-space.

Just my .02.

Tod, it is probably because it is just such a staple in everyones history. Easy to find everything for it plus he can shoot F/TR with it too. But you are right about the 6.5-284 in that it is probably just as easy to load.

Whats the barrel life like with the 6 BR and 6.5? Also is it true that if you get a Long action Savage you can go between a 300 mag , 6.5 or .308 by only changing the barrel and bolt face?

Thanks

Yes,you really don't want a complicated caliber with fire forming cases and all if you are new to the sport. You will still have a ball and can be competitive with a lot of easier calibers,i.e. .300 Win Mag, .300 RUM (with Brake),etc.Yes Savages can be switched to any caliber you have a barrel for in minutes. When looking for a barrel just remember your rifle takes a small shank barrel not a large shank.

My Choice

Get yourself a 6BR and be done with it.You can shoot in the 3's with factory ammo and the empty cases can be reloaded later in a full blown bench gun or a varmint rig.
Barrel life is around 2700 rounds and the recoil is very mild.
If you don't like the gun you can always sell it without losing an arm and a leg.
You won't have any gun offer you the versatility and accuracy of a standard 6BR.

My next rifle will be a 6br great round but he doesn't reload yet. That is why the 308 recommendation. Great factory ammo and available brass. Can't find 6br brass or ammo right now but that I hope that will soon change.

Graf & Sons carries the factory 6BR ammo based on the good Lapua brass but since the normal vendors ran out of brass people have bought out all the factory ammo as well.

Right now in my neck of the woods good 308 ammo is all dried up as well. You can still get Remington or PMC hunting loads but nothing accuracy related.

Your right Lynn, everything is dried up right now. Maybe archery is looking better right now.
