F/TR or F-Open with Tactical rifle?

I am trying to decide between 260, 6.5x47 and 308 for a tactical rifle project. 260 is probably the best performer of the three, but I like the ability to load straight from Lapua brass for the 6.5x47 and 308.

Recently I started considering the fact that a 308 tactical rifle would allow me to shoot F-T/R for fun and practice. If I had a 260, would competing in F-open still be worthwhile? Fun? or somewhat of a joke? I guess I could remove the bipod and shoot off a rest in F-Open to not be at a severe disadvantage with a 12 lbs mag fed rifle w/ 22" barrel.

You pretty much answered you own question.

The .308Win is a good way to learn the fundamentals of shooting F-class.

While there are no flies on the .260 Rem with appropriate bullets for 1K, you may find that there are others in Open class that will make you wonder why you chose it!

It boils down to how well a match in your area is attended, and who shows up and with what cartridge.

The question you have to answer is whether winning is important and how important.

You can make 260 brass from either Lapua 243 or 308.

The nice thing about competing in F-TR is that you are limited to the .308 or .223. As soon as you go with the .260 in F-Open, you will be wondering if a .284 would suit you better, etc. We have both a F-TR and F- Open contingent at our local club competitions. Mid to high 580's win the F-Open and mid to high 570's win the F-TR at 600 yards. I like being held to
the .308, so I can concentrate on my loads and my technique without having to worry about the new caliber of the month.

.260 is a great round compared to the .308 (not that .308 isn't) but if going F-Open, you better look at something more in line with a 6.5-284 or 284 as they have the speed over the .260. F/TR in my opinion puts everyone on more of a level playing field than F-Open. You will probably find that you'll spend more on barrels in F-Open if planning on being competitive due to the calibers needed.

Thanks for the replies. I believe F/TR and the 308 is in my future. Thanks again!
