Hi All Finley got the lath - mill that was given to me over 1 1/2 years ago .It hasent been used in 15-20 years . I well let the oil set-teal back down as it was tipped on its end bye movers . Then I well look it over and rewire some of it to see if it works . I have been told that it had all oil changed and was gotten to run by a former shop teacher 2-3 years ago . I have great hopes for it and may be asking for some help if I run into problems . PS it was made in Austria so it is A GOOD ONE . Rick

Glad to hear you finally got that machine. I got a new machine today too. I was given a 14.5" south bend. Cost $250 to get it home. It is nice and heavy and should be good for deep boring a new action.

Hi Dan I payed 350.00 to have mine moved from school to my basement . It is not were it well end up . I just did not have the energy to move every thing around ,the way I wint it. It is in my basement and I can get all around it to work on it . Off to treatments now and Thr. have several app. so maybe Fri. to start working on it .

YA----HA quick change of the main wire going to the outlet and I am running . I well get some help moving machines around and I could be cutting metal soon .

I've just spent about a month tweaking my small, cheapo Chinese lathe to get everything aligned just right. After that you realize how many hundreds, then thousands of dollars you really need in decent quality tooling if you don't want to have to wait half a week to have something new shipped to you every other step of the way through a project. My UPS guy must think I'm crazy for the amount of boxes that have been delivered each day.

One of the issues the older lathes can have, especially if they've seen heavy use at a school, is wear on the bottom of the tailstock. Don't be afraid to shim in between the two sections of the tailstock to bring it into alignment. Make sure you've got alignment when the tailstock is both fully retracted and fully extended. Feeler gauges at auto stores seem to be the best deal on small quantities of shims. This is just one of many things you're going to spend countless hours on, but it's fun.

Now of course I want a bigger lathe :)

Turns out my new lathe is a 16".

You guys! Nice pieces of equipment. Makes me so jealous! But, then again, if either were in my basement I'd be so lost as it's been ±45 years since I've touched one.

Rick, good luck with all that's in front of you.

Dave

Here you go Rick, some info.

The only Emco familiar with was the old 1980's Emco5cnc with cassette. Quite capable for such a small machine.

I am on my 5th machine now a Harrison M300, nice size but have an old 80's Boxford TLC125 doing nothing as well, scrapped the others.

Hi All I do not think the machine saw much use . I know it has not been used in the last 15-20 years . I talked to some 30 somethings that say in there years at HS they only saw it used 1-2 times . I well try out all the speeds and feeds thru. or Fri . .

Lots of info

Turns out my new lathe is a 16".

Hi Dan,

If you don't know, there is a South Bend Forum on the Practical Machinist. Anything you could ever want or need to know there and a fun place to participate in.
