Email Tip of the Day

Benchrest shooters love to send email to everyone in their list of contacts.

Computer Email tip of the day.
If you send an email to a group of people and one of them has a Virus that collects email addresses and reports them to a spammer then all the people who were in your group are now on spammer lists.
A lot of these Virus programs are created and managed by an individual who then sells lists of valid email addresses world wide.
The more sophisticated ones will even create lists that are region and/or topic specific.
The best way to help prevent this is to send your group emails using blind copy (Bcc).
I have mentioned this to people who send a lot of group emails and they tell me their recipients like to see all the people who are receiving their email. If that is the case so be it but in my mind is it worth the risk of potential non stop spam to yourself and others?
Just a thought.

Doug, how do you blind copy? is there a key for it or what? thanks, Ron Tilley

Bcc in Outlook Express setup:
To show Blind Copy (Bcc);
Click on Send – Like you were sending an email.
In the New Message window click on View on the menu.
Then click on All Headers.

Now you should see Bcc as a place to put the email address.

Now just cancel out of that New Message and now Bcc should be visable any time you send an email.

Now if you are one of the unfortunate computer user who uses AOL or any other Web based email program then there might be hope.
For example in AOL click on Settings and put a check mark next to Show Full Headers.

This brings up another Tip of the Day.
Unless you need to use AOL as your ISP to connect to the internet the best thing you can do to speed up your computer is to get rid of AOL and it’s Spam & Spyware!:(
If you want to keep your AOL email address then just use Outlook Express to get the mail or go to AOL’s website and log in.
If you have all your Contacts in AOL – Beware – AOL has been know to lose them and/or AOL will not always be free!

Doug, it also might be mentioned that Mcafee or Norton go a long way here. I currently have Norton, use some group mail stuff but have never been spammed. For a lousey $35 a year it is probably cheap, especially for anybody with a teenager within a 100 mile radius.
