Eley Team Test

I had a chance to try some of the Eley Team ammunition Thursday and was very impressed with it. I had a box of Lot 1262 (machine #1, 1058 fps) and a box of 1045 fps from machine #3 (sorry no lot number).

The 1048 fps speed scored an aggregate of 0.298" for five 5-shot groups and the 1058 fps speed aggregate for four 5-shot groups was 0.204". At that point, a squall line moved through and I quit shooting.

I have more of the 1058 on the way (thanks Dan) and we'll see how it performs. So far though, it shoots slightly better than the Lapua Master M I've been using.

Interesting results! Thanks for sharing.

What rifle/barrel combo?

Factory

Cooper TRP-3 barrel with Hoehn tuner and Jard trigger. The rifle continues to shoot most ammo well but the Team was the best so far. It will be interesting to see if I can duplicate that performance. There's a match Sunday and I'll post the results. Of course it'll be skill/rifle/ammo if groups are small but I've not settled on my excuse if theyr'e not.

Match

Results for the TRP-3 shooting the Eley Team lot 1241 @ 1058 fps for Light Custom were: 0.180", 0.353", 0.265", 0.122" and 0.215" for an aggregate of 0.2270".

In Heavy Custom it was: 0.307", 0.207", 0.159", 0.255" and 0.156" for an aggregate of 0.2168". Bottom line is that the ammo shoots in that rifle. On the other side, it was miserable in the Sporter (Cooper JSR).

I guess it just shows that different rifles like different ammunition. Feed 'em what they like. I think the Eley Team is worth a try. I've decided my excuse for heavy Custom was that my shoes were tied too tight. In the Sporter I didn't have to look very far: The rifle just didn't like the ammo in today's conditions:D

Sporter

The JSR rides just OK, not good. I am using a Sinclair BR adapter with Protektor cordura bag in a Cowan rest and that helps some but it's still difficult. The adapter makes the rifle ride so high in the rest I have to use a brick under my rear bag to get sufficient elevation on the butt. I cannot compliment Joe Cowan enough for the fine rest. It is every bit as good as the borrowed Bald Eagle I was using. That said, when I do my part the JSR can shoot very well and I've has several 5-shot groups in the 0.2' range and one 0.058". I guess sporter is supposed to be difficult. FWIW, I do like the JSR and hope the TRP-3 scores will help me overcome mediocre scores in sporter class

What ammo are you using in the JSR? I have a Custom Classic I will be using in IR 50/50 this summer (first time competing).

Until Now

I've been using Lapua Master M with pretty good results. It shot well in both the TRP-3 and JSR. It wasn't outstanding in either one but I'd get an occasional very good target. I have been blaming my skills (or lack thereof) until i tried the Team. I'll be using that as long as I still have some and will hope the next lots shoot as well. I need to work more with the JSR because I am still struggling with it.

Third Test

I tested the Eley Team today in a club IR5-50/50 style match and it continues to shoot well. Scores were 250-15X, 248-12X and 248-10X so I ordered a case. The bottom line is I am new to the sport and very pleased to find an ammunition my rifle seems to like. Now I just hope posting this information didn't cause that lot to be sold out.:D
