Doldrums...............
I've been sailing along in my Rimfire adventures until of late and have hit the "doldrums"...
You know the point where you know less now than the point where you started!~
Marty has me thinking about this light tuner so i wanted to try it on my "big" barrel. My Lilja tight bore 6 grove 1.125 dia barrel....
A Hoen won't bore out to fit a barrel of that dia so i made the middle part of a Hoen on my lathe with the narrow ( i think they are 32 tpi) threads that fit the 1.125 dia bbl, used the outer hub with scribed numbers to help me keep track where i am.... I used jb weld to fix the tuner on my Lilja barrel -saved a step on the mill and i didn't have to worry about distorting the bore at exit with a collar clamp too tight.
Total weight on the tuner was 4.5 oz. Without the tuner the bbl was shooting real nice a lot of one hole groups with SK Standard+ - it does seems a little nicer than the first time i tried it -never with any kind of a tuner..
I only have just a few boxes of Eley left so i'm working with my SK Standard Plus. I have cut some extractor slots but when i first chambered my Lilja i used a cone breach.
it looks like the tuner will make some changes... i'm about 1/2 way out and it is real sensitiv to adjustments.... I just figured with a light weight tuner and a large dia bbl would take moving the tuner a round or two to get some changes. Well it looks like i was wrong. I've done some testing and the thought i have arrived at is just a click or 2 is a major change.
I had my chrony own for a few test sessions but today i went to the 'skunk wurks and was going to try my new split bushing i made in for barrel vise.. i didn't want to heat and remove the tuner -wanted it to stay in the exact same place.
I was tired of the spent case not extracting, the rifle was coming apart. Let me regress a bit... before Christmas i had ground some on the end of my extractors- trying for a better fit for extraction. I ground a bit more today while inspecting my cone. To me it looked plenty good but still had extraction problems.
It was short chambered so i could grove just into the second driving band. I'm figuring well maybe i'm sticking the case in the leade... It was chambered with a #2 calfee reamer, i couldn't find it handy but i found an Anschutz reamer.. I had the barrel chucked in my lathe , i thought i was going to "massage" the cone but like i said it looked great....
I took the Anschutz and cut all the way to the part of the reamer that will cut the case head if you go any farther... I went deep this time to be sure the case would clear the leade... Did a quick polish job so the shell case wouldn't stick... everything back together
First 4 or 5 shots ejected perfect then the case started sticking again... dang it!~! I give up, lol.
What kind of extractors come with a Turbo... i will buy some new ones and see if it helps!! Anyway i shot 15 or so rounds and the bbl seemed to be still shooting without engraving the driving band. The Anschutz reamer did remove more metal than what i was thinking.
It was about dark and that box of ammo was gone.. gonna put it up instead of opening a new box. Well i had about a 1/2 box of SK Rifle match open qand the gun was just now getting warmed up -mid 40's today. It has neverb shot good in any barrel i have but just thought i would try it..
I started to tun on the chrony the Standard Plus shoots about 1055 -1060. I know the crap wasn't going to shoot so i didn't turn on the chrony...
This is the first 5 shots of the SK Rifle match just at dark.... If i just knew what did i do?? maybe just the cooler weather.......... oh don't forget -what kind of extractors do i have please, i gotta get some new ones?? ....joe
