Dead Center for older H10

Dead center needed for the spindle of the older heavy10 to turn between centers. Friend is trying to set up to turn between centers on his older machine. What does he look for?

Butch, on all of our smaller Lathes, if we want to turn between centers, we just chuck up a piece of steel and turn it to a 60 degree center, then use a chuck jaw to drive the Lathe dog. Something like a 1 inch grade 8 bolt does a great job.

The advantage of this is the center will run absolutely dead true.

Butch, I think the taper per ft is the same as a Morse taper, the big and small end dimensions fall between a #4 and # 5. In short, it's proprietary to South Bend. The faceplate that screws on to drive the dog is available on EBay.

It's funny, all of our newer 18 Through 22 inch Lathes with 3 to 4 inch spindle holes come with a big heavy spindle plug with a standard Morse Taper in it. In all my years, I can't remember ever using one.

On the Heavy 10 that I have, there is a sleeve that fits in the spindle and holds a standard 2 morse taper dead center. I do not think that the outside of the sleeve is a morse taper.

Pete is correct the spindle is not morse taper and it does take a South Bend Heavy 10 adapter sleeve with a #2 MT pictured below.

Butch,

I've got one for my Heavy 10 as well. Would you like me to take some measurements from mine in case you end up needing to make one?

Justin,
He will machine a center in his chuck and use it. I believe it is like a #3 or as Jackie says the same rate of taper.
Thanks all.

Butch,
Jackie is correct that H-10 spindle adapter is not a std. morse taper. Here are dim. on mine. 2.500 long
1.510 - 1.634. Hope this helps.
