crown end

Soon I will fit a new barrel in my rifle, so how much should I cut in the crown end of the barrel? Is one inch enough?
Thanks

Many barrel makers will mark how much to cut off the muzzle...

an inch will just clean up most barrels, but an inch and a half is guaranteed to clean it all up.

All barrelmakers say at least an inch should come off. But as Dennis said, if it does not affect anything, go a little more.

Just so you will know, the reason for this is during the lapping proccess, there is always a little bit of "bellmouthing" at each end as a consequence of the lap. Sometimes it is hardly noticeable, but I have seen some barrels that were as much as .001 big for at least 1/2 inch in.

I can attest to this first hand. When i first started shooting these rifles i had a new rifle and a new 6mm 8 twist barrel blank. i was under the impression that i needed the barrel as long as possible so i demanded jon to leave the barrel as long as we possibly could and i ask him to only cut 1/2" off the muzzle end of the blank. Well the barrel didnt shoot all that well, and while discussing the issue with jon he knew we needed to cut more off the muzzle than what we did. I sent the barrel back and he took another 3/4" off and all was good. lessened learned for sure and it wasn't one of those free lessons either. Lee

I am also planing to add another barrel in my rifles. I guess it will be more fun and accuracy.

This weekend I will test the new barrel that I fitted to my rifle. This barrel was cut only one inch. As i asked this question after install the barrel, and be to lazy to redone the crown, lets see what happens. If the results arent good, I will cut another half inch. Now, to the range...
