Copper eliminator cleaning rods/aluminum jags

With all of the new copper remover barrel cleaners, I'm starting to see new cleaning rods with aluminum threaded tips and aluminum jags. The advertising indicates that this change will avoid "false positive" indications of copper barrel fouling.

While aluminum is a soft metal, many manufacturers abandoned its use over the past years, opting for brass components. One of the reasons, so I was told, is that aluminum can oxidize. When it does, it forms aluminum oxide, which is extremely hard, and sufficiently abrasive to damage barrel steel.

So are back to the same situation again? Or are the newer versions of these aluminum components of a different alloy to avoid the oxidation risk?

I got one of these white delrin jags and it does aheckuva job and no false readings and best of all protects the crown from my heavy hands. They reccommend round Sinclair patches (at least for my calibers) for best fit. I also use the one for the brush and the crown is protected even though I do a push/pull through about 15 times.

Hello twentytwoguy--

Thanks for the lead. The delrin products look interesting. Ditto the brush holding jags. I believe that these delrin devices are good insurance in protecting the crowns of my rifles. With regard to false readings, I still will use my BoreTech rods, which have brass connectors at the ends, but I believe the main source of the false readings is the brass jag itself.

If you are talking RF here, Copper won't be an issue. I have the Delrin Jags and Brush Holders. They are SUPER! I use them for my CF rifles and RF as well.

Hello Pete--

I was more concerned about the aluminum put in some of the "new" jags (so that they won't give false copper readings with certain solvents). My worry was the aluminum might oxidize and form the highly-abrasive compound aluminum oxide. Either way, Delrin would solve this concern, rimfire or centerfire.

Thanks for the additional endorsement of Delrin. It's time I ordered some of those components.
