Collets vs 3 jaw chuck

My Grizzly G9036 did not have a 5C collet closer attachment available, so I made a hand wheel type. I bought the end part of another collet attachment from the Grizzly replacement parts folks, the part that fits in the #5 Morse taper in the spindle nose, and machined a handwheel type closer using 4140 tubing, some aluminum and stainless steel stock, and a Torrington thrust bearing from McMaster-Carr. About a two day job, working at an easy pace. I use it all the time, much more often than the 3 jaw.

I have been meaning to get some pictures of this and a couple other tooling projects posted on my site. Soon, I hope.

Cheers,

Posted tooling photos, including 5C Handwheel type closer

I got some time and managed to put up a small collage of some of my shop made tooling on my site, here:

A homebrew 5C handwheel type closer is shown in the last few pictures.

Question the mounting accuracy?

This is what I had in mind....allows full use of the headstock opening.

That looks like a nice setup bryan, but I'm curious as to how it mounts, and will you be able to adjust it to run dead true? If you have to readjust it everytime you remove and remount it, it could be a pain.

It seems like it mounts via the same 3 holes that the normal mini- lathe chucks mount on. Perhaps there is a small taper projection on the rear that fits into the spindle taper to align it?

I would recommend asking the Little Machine Shop about alignment. Hope it works for you, as it would be a lot more accurate than a 3 jaw.

Best of luck to you. Joe

One of my "heavy 10's" was made for 5C collets so when I found 72 (.016 increments) 5C collets for 75.00 I wasted no time getting them. Since then ANY round stock 1.062 an under regardless of diameter can be machined with ease with no need to use an indicator. My 3 jaw chuck has collected a lot of dust since then.
