Cleaning/lead/steel wool?

Fred: I respect your opinion and over the time I have been here on this fourm I have learned a great deal from your post. The question I have now is (Is there anything that will remove lead) It really bothers me to run steel wool down my barrels. Please enlighten me"". garrisone.

Get a tube of IOSSO and say goodbye to the wool forever.

I think a lot of 0000 steel wool for certain applications. However, there are a couple of places that I would not want to stick the stuff and my rifle barrel is one of them.

Just me.

Take some 0000 and try to scratch a piece of barrel steel !!
I respect your concern, I also did at first.
Remember this is not used during routine cleaning.

Fred,

I hope you understand that I am kidding you some. I have made furniture and finished it with polyurethane varnish. The final step is to rub it with 0000 steel wool and then apply a coat of wax. It leaves a beautiful satin finish.

It is logical that steel wool would clean out any lead buildup.

4 ought steel wool will remove stainless steel. However, how much scrubbing will it take to affect the accuracy? Who knows. I've used bronze wool in the past which is much safer. It can obtained from Brownells.

I don't think steel wool hurts a barrel's accuracy. My experience is with centerfire barrels that are gone anyway at 1500-2000 shots. Think of it this way. If your barrel "leads up" such that you need steel wool then it really doesn't matter if it hurts or not. The sooner it's gone the better.

Again, I don't think steel wool harms a barrel. In fact, I'm gonna scrub with some right now.
