Cleaning a H/H tuner and the crown

Bill Wynne mentioned in another thread, the need to clean the internal opening in a Hoehn/Harrell tuner and also the crown. I must admit that I do not clean the tuner as often as I should, be when I do, it's usually with a flannel patch sprayed with WD-40, followed by a couple of dry patches. If the tuner adjustments are sloppy and move to easily, I will replace the internal rubber "O" ring with one that fits more snuggly. I think this often helps absorb vibration.

Back to tuner cleaning:
What's your opinion on keeping the internal opening of the tuner clean? Does a tuner and crown with a small amount of carbon build-up really have a negative effect on overall accuracy? John

Center 22,

I am fairly sure they a dirty tuner has an effect on accuracy and it isn't good. I do have a theory that the crud that builds on the crown is a worse culprit. It changes the shape of the crown.

Crud buildup on the inside of the tuner cannot be good but I don't believe that the added weight is as bad as a misshaped crown. If I understand the "Purdy Prescription", it is the length of the tuner and not the weight that makes the most changes. Let me add that we are all still learning.

Pete,

I have never thought that the build up inside the tuner was enough to cause a weight problem. On the other hand, I have lost a good number of matches to guys who regular clean their tuners.

I will clean my tuner regulary from now on.

I clean mine thoroughly to a mirror finish after each day of shooting and keep the buildup down during the match day. I still get beat a lot though

Well I never did the math, but I figure all that crap must be worth a click or two. Get yourself some TSI301 which is used to clean air guns. It's aerosol, one shot on a patch and done.
