Chargemaster inserts

Installed a Chargemaster insert into the drop tube of my chargemaster before leaving for Raton last week. I used my chargemaster from Thursday afternoon until we were done on Sunday. Based on my primer depletion that was around three hundred rounds. The chargemaster was spot on except for two drops which were one tenth under and one tenth over. I had the chargemaster set for 27.5 gn of LT-32. I haven't done the software tweaks to speed up the charge master so I don't know if that might affect the results. As it stands now, I'm a believer.

Wonderful aren't they Jerry,

I bought them for the two chargemasters I have, made new machines out of them. It's hard to believe they work as well as they do.

I hope David Moore can make enough on these things before RCBS gets wind of it.

Interesting that Moore is actually Michael David Moore. He seems to prefer using David so he won't be confused with that anti-gun nut Michael Moore.

I was trying to discern the same thing. I think it's two things. First, the interior of the insert is smooth and not threaded. Second, the i.d. of the insert is smaller that the existing drop tube so the stream of powder is narrower thus eliminating a "wall" of powder at the exit point. I think that's as good a story as anyone could make up. :p

Are they smooth on the inside and how do they stay in?

They are smooth on the inside. He makes them a tad undersized. I used nearly a full turn of clear packaging tape around the outside. Just needs to go in snugly. Click on the link in post #6 and it 'll take you right there.

Lyman sends a plastic piece with the dps measures thats exactly like that except it screws in. Makes a big difference in dispensing long grains. Ill take out my straw and make one for my chargemassa

my chargemaster over throws lt every time. I need one of these inserts for sure. my unit has been re-programmed for the added speed so I hope that wont effect anything with the insert. lee

You may want to try a new program skeet. As long as im weighing over 28 mine has never overthrown. And i dont have the insert yet

sorry. I forgot to say t32hat it over throws every time with LT32 only. All other powders are spot on. If I want 28.5gr of LT32i input 28.2 into the chargemaster. Lee

sorry for the type o's my computer has a small virus. Dam thing is always jumping around when I type. I cant throw LT with my unit for chit! I need to slow my machine back down, and I think it will get better. Lee

Interesting, At Raton, weekend before last, I dropped 27.5 gn of Lt-32 over three hundred times with only two misses one a tenth under and one a tenth over.

I dropped a super shoot's worth of lt32 for 2 guns with an air conditioner going and have slung a few hundred more since then and have never over or underthrown any charge except the first one when i turn it on

If all you want is a smooth surface inside the powder tube of the Chargemaster, then go down to your local McDonald's hamburger joint and get a few of those drinking straws that they put in the milk shakes/smoothies.
The straws over here are yellow with a red stripe and are a perfect fit!!

I have two of the inserts and I think the good performance is from more than a smooth surface. The inserts reduce the diameter of the powder stream and I think this is an equally important factor.

I've had a Chargemaster for several years. The idea of the inserts was intriguing. So, I built three of them with varying IDs of 0.234", 0.250", and 0.266". I ran a series of tests for average drop time on each. The only conclusion was that they didn't do anything except significantly slow the time for the Chargemaster to reach the designated charge weight. So, I'm back to the RCBS drop tube as originally shipped.

It may be worth noting that I most often shoot a .30BR with a load of 33.8gr/H4198. So, I've tuned my Chargemaster parameters to optimize drop time for this charge. I do occasionally get an overthrow, but not many; maybe one in every 10 or 15 drops. These drops take something like 18 seconds.

So far I've been using the chargemaster to drop around 27.5 gr of LT-32. I've had maybe 2 .01 misses out of three hundred drops. I had many more than that before I got the inserts. Usually the miss would be one or two tenths over and I got proficient at "pinching" the correct amount to remove. I'm now moving into the 30BR arena, as well, and may see different results. I'm mounting the scope on the 30BR gun as soon as I finish this post. I'll use the chargemaster to throw the H4198 and see how it goes. I've got the latest instructions from RCBS on how to tweak the chargemaster but haven't seen a need to do it yet. That might change.

It is a very nicely machined little addition to my Chargemaster, but with H4198 for my 30BR it greatly slows down overall speed.
