I have an old firearms book from Britain and in it they use a term "carton getter" and it seems it has to do with accuracy...

Can anyone explain this term?

In OZ its the guy who's turn it is to go to the pub

Jim, can you explain what "who turns it" means please? Interesting in the English Speaking World how the language can sometimes sound so "Foreign" :)

Thanks,

Pete

so the "carton getter" is the guy that has to go buy the case of beer? Is this an experiment on the effects of alcohol and accuracy?

a carton generally holes 24 cans, bottles etc.when its empty it depends who's shout it is.It is his/her turn to be the carton getter.hope this helps Pete

A shot that hits the white disc at the center of a target.

This sounds promising. It kind of fits the context in the book. How is the name derived? It would have been back in the 20's probably...

Thanks Jim,

So, the lad who's turn it is to shoot but there is nothing to shoot at at buys a Carton? Am I understanding you right?

carton
Shooting
a. a white disc at the centre of a target
b. a shot that hits this disc

Didn't know this either before I looked it up... my first guess was that eggs were awarded as prizes... looks like Glenn had it right.

Why can't the English just speak English so us furriners kin unnerstan?
