The Truth about rebated boattails
The rebate only came about because of the difficulty in making a normal boattail by home swaging methods.
In order to make a normal smooth transition boattail you would have to have a punch with a feather thin edge to push the boattail base into the point forming die. This would be no good and the punch would break at the edge.
So the only remedy was to make the punch with a thicker stronger edge and this required a rebate in the boattail base.
Testing of the bullet showed that the bottail still worked even with the rebate step.
So marketing stepped in and put a spin on it and said that it was something new and special when infact it was just the only way it could be easily done in a hand press .
