I finally realized something today.

I've been pretty damn broke for the last several years, and it all started when i met Steve Murphy.

About 8 or so years ago I met Steve and it didn’t take long for us to talk guns, hunting and about this ‘Benchrest’ activity he liked.

“you should come out and try it, I’ll even let you shoot my benchgun.”, he says.

Well the 15 or 20 shots through Steve’s Panda that afternoon got the wheels rolling in my head.

“it really doesn’t cost that much, once you get the gun and basic stuff…” he says.

That sounds very similar to me. I bought a varmint rifle built by Steve Kostanich and emailed him about it and he invited me to meet him at a local match and he would look it over. Well I did and was showing great interest in the sport and Larry Boers let me shoot his rifle and I was hooked. With in a month I bought everything to shoot the last match or the season.
I thank Steve and Larry a great deal but the wife dont like them LOL.
 
I'm very new to this but I'm glad to hear someone say what I've been thinking. Last summer a bug hit me that I was just throwing powder and bullet down range.
I started a search for a new angle and am close to shooting my first rounds. I never would have known in a hundred years that 5 G (scope and all) later I would take my first shot.
Thanks for being an honest man to bring this up, I'm seeing it clearly. ( the old lady is raising an eye brow too). But like they say , Can't take it with you.
On a side note, I have no mentor, live a bit isolated, and took you fellow as my teachers. A big thank you.(I think) ,Tom

Tom Jones, wasn't that a song or movie or something (singer maybe?), you would have a long commute to shoot in much competition. Ever thought about moving. It IS some warmer down here.

Seriously, I have found on this forum that if you ask reasonable and serious questions you will get answers. At least we will try. Some answers may be a bit gritty or smarta$$ed but hang in there if you really want to find out a how-to or why-for.

But at least when you get tuned up and ready, take a couple of weeks off and come to the Kelbly range for the Super Shoot. There will be practice for a week or so before that 4 day shoot. Vendors with goodies. The Kelbly store is loaded with goodies of many brands including their own, They will even build you a gun while you wait, almost.

For your wife, there are a bunch of really nice ladies that get out in the Amish towns and other local places to do all kind of fun stuff. I'm sure they would welcome the Mrs (wouldn't you Pam and Barbara?).

The Super Shoot is the last week of May.

Anchorage are you? I have an acquaintance in Anchorage who shoots BR. He is also a passable gunsmith.

Murphy definitely had an influence in getting me in to the sport. i got him back, at least a little by encouraging him to get a couple of nightforce scopes for some of the long range stuff we do.

Jerry, that's not really a neighborly thing to do..........The guy spends 5K on a rifle and maybe some bullets....Then you want his wife to get involved with Barb and the girls. The man will be broke on 90 secs.......I have seen the caravan leave Kelbly's. God it's enormous. All those wives and girlfriends. Oh, My God the humanity of it all.......
 
French you are correct .Ole Ponchito has cost me some serious cash over the years and so has Todd.Speaking of wives, mine doesn't shoot but she shops, ALOT when were out of town.It's not to bad as long as she has Charle's credit card

Aaron, I don't actively shoot Benchrest any more, but a .22 Hornet of mine has been shooting small enough that all the usual BR massages are being applied! Even got a Sightron 36x on the thing! And I'm checking into bullet dies.....again!
Webster defines BENCHREST as the nose candy of the common shooter.
Anyone got a Harrell's Schuetzen/pistol measure for sale? YeeeHaaaaa!

It's costly to just jump into, especially if you bought all the wrong stuff cause you don't know what you are doing. A guy needs to go and check it out before he jumps in, I would suggest a shooting school..

Here's another guy that has cost me money. his was more indirect, though.

for those that don't know Britt, he's been 'somewhat' successful in trap shooting before getting into Benchrest.

You guys shot at the new ATA facility in Illinois? I went by there coming from a BR nationals in St Louis and they were just started on it. I'm down to one trap gun now and my fingers can't stand the stress anymore. Besides, I quit shooting registered trap because I can't see ery ell anymore.

So now it is benchrest,45X Leupold with a 3X multiplier and still can't see bullet holes at 200.

The new facility in Sparta is great! The little lady and I have a campground lease out there. You can drive right behind your bank and sit in the AC of your car till it is your time. And there are golf cart paths everywhere you want to go. Beer tent is bigger. The shoot offs are a little tricky as the sun goes down it is in your eyes a bit. Makes that target at 27yds mighty small until the lights go on and the all orange targets come out. Trap is a fun sport but now that the money is out of it I had to get a real job.
