I have a few questions about Benchrest shooting & scopes. I was thinking of USBR or ARA shooting rules Sporter Class 8.5lb

Anyway what do you tend to see more CZ452 varmint class or American class barrels?

Why do people in this sport recommend 35x power or higher? I was thinking about a 24x scope.

What reticle is better & why for this sport? fine cross hair or dot or both?

I don't think I need glasses yet, but I do from time to time has to double check what I'm looking at.. i.e. tired eyes. :p

Thanks all

Everyone else must be on their way home from a match. I'll take a quick stab at your questions.

The vast majority of folks shooting ARA sporter use custom rifles with custom barrels. I cannot recall ever seeing a CZ at a match.

We like to see what we are shooting at. I will admit sometimes we use too much scope. I'm shooting 55x now having moved up from 45x. 36x is standard because the most cost effective entry into BR is the Weaver and the 36x is the same price as the 24x. If you like how a 24x works go for it. No one will know if they don't look through your scope. But you have to be able to see that lil dot in the middle of an ARA card. We hold off that dot just the width of a cross hair so more power makes it easier.

Reticle is a very personal thing. You don't want anything bigger than a 1/8 min dot as even it covers the mothball on the target. No dot works better for some. I'm not one of them.

At our club in Dania Beach, Florida we shoot mostly non sanctioned USBR matches 3 times a month. We only shoot two classes, Unlimited and Sporter rifle which run concurrent, so a competitor can not shoot both classes on the same day.

We follow the rules for USBR Sporter class. The rifle must be "as purchased" from the factory, with a few minor modifications permitted. The scope power is unlimited, but the rifle and scope cannot exceed 8 1/2 pounds total. Many shooters use CZ rifles and they have been competitive in this class. Up until recently the Sporter 3 card aggregate record was held by a CZ 452 (692 11X) but the record has now be broken by a shooter using a Anschutz 1710 (703 6X) with a 36X scope. I have already exceeded both of the above Sporter records (710 9X) in a practice match (which did not count) using a Anschutz 1712, 36X Leupold scope and Center-X ammo. I believe the Annie's are the way to go, if you want to seriously compete in USBR Sporter class.

I have never competed "ARA Sporter" class, but I know you would be wise to follow Bob Fingers advice.

Thanks for the input guys, if anyone else wants to add to this please do. I'm new to this changing my shooting style from predator hunting, pistols & varmint do to injury & nerve damage to my strong arm.
I want to be involved in shooting and this will be the only way. So I'm looking at Rimfire Benchrest in my area, we don't have Rimfire Benchrest going yet & I plan to get this going & growing.
Here we only shoot F-Class, IPDA, IPSC, PPC, 3-gun, cowboy action. I have talked to a few people and there is an interest in the rimfire sport so I'm looking into this.

Most of these questions posted here are more for me, as the nearest place for me to compete is over 3+ hours away. So it's not like I can just go and check out a match.
My wife said 2 month ago she wants to shoot again. it's been 20+ years so I was thinking of making it a family thing, so I need 4 rigs for the family.

I asked about the CZ452 varmint barrel over the American style barrel in USBR which are more common in USBR.
all my long guns in the past have been varmint or heavy barrels with the idea less barrel whip/movement when fired. as I'm sure I can make weight of 8.5lbs with a CZ varmint gun
