Bolt handle rubbing receiver

Has anyone experienced their bolt handle hitting the back of its slot in the receiver, and noticed a difference on target after the interference was relieved? I'll have a chance to check this with my own gun next week, hopefully. I'm searching for the causes for three vertical flyers during a match that were too far out to be caused by the wind. One was a low shot on the first target at 100 yards before the mirage had started. The other two were high shots in the afternoon at 200 yards after a fair amount of mirage had settled in. One was so high, it was touching the bottom of the 8 ring. In spite of my efforts to shoot at the lower spot that the bull seems to "snap back" to in a boil, these last two shots could be classic misreading of the mirage. But I have no explanation for the low shot at 100. Could the bolt handle interference do this? Thanks in advance for sharing your experience.

There should always be clearance between the rear of the bolt handle and the cut out in the receiver. If the rear of the bolt handle is rubbing, then it could cause variations in bolt/receiver lug engagement and inconsistent accuracy. If you're hitting there, your bolt handle is probably too far rearward and you're also not getting as much extraction camming as you should have. Haven't had this happen as when I true an action and there is a possibility of the bolt handle hitting at the rear of the receiver cut out, I take it off and move it forward.

Mike,
Thanks, that's what I expected. Any reason why it should cause vertical flyers, but not horizontal? I am scratching my head trying to figure this out. Maybe I'll never know for sure, but I've taken a few thousandths off the back of the bolt. There may be five thousandths clearance in the front. This is a very tightly fit slot.

Thanks,
Keith
