best practice ammo

Walther KKM .22 lr circa 1955. I have all the paperwork from the sale and various competitions shot in Germany from the original owner. Of course it's all in German so I don't know what kind of competitions they were? It shoots better than both my 52D's off the bench.
I bought it from Scott Pilkington with NO import marks.

Champion Choice is who I like to deal with. They are probably not the cheapest price on SK. I have been a loyal customer for years due to their customer service and their willingness to find obsolete parts for old target guns of which I have several. He found me an original globe front sight for the pictured old Walther.

They really helped me get started at Camp Perry by answering all my rookie questions.

this is in jest but i have 200.00 cash saved up will that buy that wonderfull looking rifle? i might even throw in a 1022 to boot.

OK, I'll send you an International cashier's check for $2,000.00. Keep $1,800.00 for your time and trouble and send me a $200.00 postal MO for the rifle.

Toss the 10/22 in the nearest dumpster.

Big Al, I suspect you are right. Unfortunately, there are so many options to choose from, it's a bewildering choice. I was hoping to hear something that would really stand out from the crowd. In looking at the PSL scores - it appears that Eley is far and away the favorite brand and Match and Tenex seem pretty evenly split. I was hoping for some sort of similar summary on second tier ammo but it ain't forecoming so I'll just have to buy a few and have at it.

brent buy all the cheap stuff you want but you will not get by on less than 5.00 to 6.00 a box regardless. ive tried it all ive got boxes of junk setting on my shelves.

i know its going to be painfull but you wont be in the shell burner stage any longer! a box will last quite awhile try it you will like it belive me.

get yourself the best b/r rifle and the best scope you can afford they are listed here all the time and go for it. quality tops cheap every time. ask fred he will tell you straight.

you are doing a nigerian shuffle on me but man i like the looks of your walter.

Every time I shoot for practice I am practicing shooting for record so use my best ammo. I want to see how I'm doing. I know it's expensive but it's the only way I can measure my progress. For just plain practice shooting I'll get out my Walmart 10/22 and Remington bulk ammo and blast away. Flame away.

Bob, I have no interest in the benchrest rifles as used here. My rifle cost me about as much as a top of the line bench rifle right around $3k, not including sights which are another couple kilo bucks, but it is much more interesting to me and actually legal in the games that I shoot. Bolts are not. I'm hardly a shell burner either - it's a single shot. But that said, I still can't afford to shoot a hundred or more shots 3 times per week in practice if it costs me a $35 in ammo every time. Just can't. So, to learn what I want to learn, I'll have to be with less.

You guys know a lot about shooting .22s and that's why I post and eves drop here. (though now that Bill Calfee has been booted, I think my time here is coming to a close).

Thanks for all of your help.

I'm probably not the person to say this, but I think I see a pattern here. Know what I think may be a big factor in how well a gun shoots with whatever ammunition, be it top-of-the-line stuff or $5/box stuff?

Confidence.

Establishing confidence in your given setup to put a bullet where you want it to go may take rounds that cost 50 cents every time you pull the trigger, or rounds that cost 10 cents every time you pull the trigger. Along the same note, it may require a Calfee rifle or a beat-up CMP rifle to shoot X's. Facts are facts and that means quality equipment simply shoots better (something I am learning the hard way) and talk is cheap (X's speak), but I'm thinking confidence has alot to do with it.

Because I can, I'm working on rounding up as much $5-$10 boxes of ammunition I can to have a good day of 50-yard, 5-round group testing. At the end of the day, I should have some no-bull results for my rifle. I've been shooting Wolf Match with decent results (and holding onto a few boxes from a hell of a lot), but experimenting won't hurt.

Don't dump the 10/22.
Plinking is fun. Some of the best shooting fun in my life has been with an old Remington semi-auto I got for Christmas in 1961. That old rifle and a brick of CCI mini-mags is a pure blast of fun at cans, squirrels and anything that needs shootin'.

your right i still have 2 1022s my wife and i both like to shoot and they are tricked out very accurate but the true precision shooting calls for very good equipment.

does this discount a 1022 shooter from being here absolutely not. i read their posts and enjoy them even learn from them. by the way i can tear down a 1022 and have it back together again in 15 minutes but they are complicated.

a bolt rife is really just a very simple thing isnt it. as i have said before if your life depened on it take the bolt unless you can play scattergun i supposse.

some of the precisions shooters have rifle that are absolutly a work of art and they are led by some of the best smiths in the world.

Practice Ammo

Lupua and SK are owned by the same parent corporation. Wolf is made by SK. Eley is Eley. All of these companies compete in the 50 meter universe. For me I would look at SK and Wolf rifle match or Eley Club. All three are in the 6 bucks a box range.

Another thought on ammo

I mostly shoot at 50 yards. I have tried different ammo in various rifles and it is true that each of the rifles has ammo it likes, ammo it is so so about and ammo it hates. I have a few rifles that shoot Lapua Midas very well and also shoot Federal Gold Medal Target pretty well. Federal is out of that ammo now, but distributors may have some in stock. Give the barrel a cleaning and try a box of 50 and maybe you will get good results. For real cheap, the Federal Auto Match sold by Wal Mart is what I often practice with, and some lots are pretty good.
