best practice ammo

I am looking for some inexpensive ammo of decent quality for serious practice. At >$16 a box, I can't shoot Eley's top of the line for practice anymore. Just can't. So what next?

Wolf Match Target and Eley Practice are both around $4.50 a box.

How do they compare?

Anything similar to consider?

I will be shooting 240 yds and working on wind reading. Reasonable accuracy is important to the point that I can learn something and not simply fight with junk ammo.

Thanks,

Brent

I practice with SK Special Pistol Match in my Davis 40X. Heck, I shoot local matches with the same SK ammo. It's much more consistent than Wolf.

That's interesting. I thought SK was the same as Wolf. At least Championshooters.com said SK Standard Plus was the same as Wolf Match Target.

Brent

SK Standard Plus is no good. "SK Special Pistol Match" is the only SK ammo worth messing with. Not "Pistol Match", "Special Pistol Match".
Champion Shooters doesn't have much esperience with benchrest shooters/shooting.

Brent,

"I will be shooting 240 yds and working on wind reading. Reasonable accuracy is important to the point that I can learn something and not simply fight with junk ammo. "

How far? my .222 Rem centerfire lost all accuracy at that range. Aside of that I don't compete with Tenex, I compete with Match. It's $9.80 a box if you buy it by the case. And Match , for the most part will compete with Tenex everyday.

Carp

Well, I use the SK at 200 meter silhouette and do pretty good with it. Lapua and Eley are no more accurate at that range than some cheaper ammos.

Carp, I have never tried Match, but it is on my "to do list".

I usually shoot at 200 yds for Schuetzen competition and Tenex will clean the proverbial Wolf/SK clock at that distance. Perhaps because I have particular velocities of Tenex that seem to work best while Wolf/SK is whatever it is. I will give Match a go though. I did a little analysis of the first PSL match, and while valid statistical assessment is pretty darn near impossible to do, it was clear that Match was giving Tenex a good run for its money and may even have been better (match winner was using Tenex).

At 237 yds, a .22 rimfire responds to wind almost exactly the same way that a .45-90 will at 1000 yds. I cannot practice at 1000 around here, so I'm going to use the .22 and practice at 240.

I've shot a 36 of 40 with an iron sight 52-d and SK Special Pistol Match. The four that I missed were offhand chickens at 50 meters. I usually shoot in the low 30's. I've also shot a 35 with a bone stock Martini MKII iron sight gun. Again, cleaned the course except for the offhand chickens. Silhouette targets are from fifty meters to 200 meters.
I have tried and cannot do that with Wolf or relatively slow Tenex.
I'll definatly keep using SK for long range targets.
It's all fun no matter what ammo is used. Knocking something over at 200 meters with an iron sight .22 LR is a thrill.

I have shot that same steel silhouette course only once. It was using Tenex. I shot a 30/40 missing one turkey and hitting only one chicken. Otherwise, I cleaned it. A friend using my rifle and the same ammo shot the same score, missed all the chickens and cleaned everything else. The Tenex had zero problems with the rams at 200 meters. The rifle was my custom Winchester low wall and iron sights. Tenex will work fine at 200 m for me.

I thought you started this post looking for an inexpensive practice ammo? Tenex is hardly inexpensive practice ammo.
I'll take SK Special Pistol Match anyday over Tenex or any other .22 ammo for shooting silhouettes.
Our matches are won at the Chicken line.

lLapua Master M X-lots & Midas M X lots

I still Have a good selection of Master M at $6.90 that will give you better accuracy than the lower grade sk and wolf also a good selection of Midas M and L at $10.45. cspss@att. com or 913-649-7658

Wind reading...

What are you using to read the wind at 240yds? Flags, smallbore or benchrest devices on music stands, probes? I'm shooting 200yard smallbore and trying to figure out the best set-up to be able to correlate reading the mirage (what I'm using now) to using some mechanical aids.

Mad,
My point was in response to your comments that Tenex doesn't cut it for you on silhouettes at 200M. It did for me and Al with my rifle - 20 in a row. A second friend shooting a Winder musket used my Tenex and did nearly as well, although his original barrel was far from pristine.

Charles, I have shot a bit of Laupa in this rifle and it does not like it. I don't understand why. My old Martini loved the stuff, as did a Ballard. But the low wall says no way.

gc, I will be using a least 3 wind flags of some sort - probably a somewhat heavy plastic to scale in some way to regular creedmoor flags.

22 ammo

i dont know much of this type shooting but i have to believe you will have to buy good ammo for the same reasons good ammo prevails in B/r Shooting. i am a tightwad and don stith told it to me pretty plainly and straight.

what is it? you get what you pay for! so i got some 10,00 a box black eley adn suddenly i can shoot i have fought this for months and just coulnt bear shooting 20c a shoot but i dont think there is just a better way. im not too far from being convinced with this ammo i can compete wiht the rifles i have by the way.

so pay up and cry everytime you shoot it costs you 20c. heavy b/r guys are now to 30c loading their own by the way.

it aint cheap boys just pay up and cry when you send that bullet down range.

Bob, I suspect there is a lot of truth in that. But there will be no practice if it costs me 32 cents per shot. 20 cents per shot is probably too high too. I don't know what my upper limit will be for this. But I guess I'll start with 10 cents a shot Wolf MT and see what happens. The special pistol match stuff and the Eley Practice will be next up on the list.

your ammo

brent i have had to look at it this way. i have a now a 2,000.00 b/r rifel with a 400.00 scope on it with a somewhat decent rest not a pappas or close but i have had to decide after i watch bullets fly all over the place that i can either be a wannabee or maybe a good shooter with a very good rifle then what is the solution.

you can get no satisfaction just hearing a bang and no idea of where your shot will go just accepting the fact i have to spend money for the best reliable ammo i can fine.

now with ely black box 10 bux my cost 12 to you i take quite a bit of time looking at that target very carefully and take delight in see that bullet hit exactly where i want it.

this process takes time so now a box of ammo lasts a long time and what joy to see the results now of patience and good ammo.

so spend a little more but now i understand this bunch of b/r nuts and their sharing just what it takes.

maybe some of the big hitters will step in here and help i know they lurk around here.

I'll disagree with that statement.

SK Pistol Match has been about the best cheap ammo I have shot. That 1st group below will give any good box of Eley all it wants for group size to try and beat.

A better picture of the first group above.

Randy McCarver shot a practice RBA target of 250-20x or 21x with SK Pistol Match.

I won a local BR match Friday with SK Special Pistol Match. I shot against others using Eley and Lapua.

However, I must say the winds were in the 20 mph range and I was the only one using windflags. Of course, other shooters could also look at my flags.

I also won an iron sight 100 yard match the same day using the same ammo and shooting my Walther KKM made in 1955.

Kinda lends itself to say that if you shoot a match with what you practice with, you will probably shoot pretty good.

If I had to practice with $15.00 a box ammo, I wouldn't practice at all.

Yes, the SK Pistol Match is good also. The Special Pistol Match is faster while still being subsonic. I think it shoots in the wind better than the Pistol Match. JMO.

I have tried all the Wolf and SK ammo available. The SK Special Pistol Match shoots the best for me in my rifles. Oh, and its cheap.

Brent I think the answer is a simple one. Take all of the less expensive ammo and do your own testing. Compare what works best for your rifle, against the best your rifle does with the higher dollar ammo.

At that point you will know which way to go. What is acceptable to you for practice ammo.:)
