This is not an attempt circumvent the "Wanted to Buy" forum..

I will place an ad there also but are there places I can contact to find a decent used BR rifle?? I have searched on the internet but have not found much...

I am not going to shoot in matches..I just want to bench shoot at my local range and so some loading...I bought (and sold) a couple Varmint rifles lately because they just did not do what I wanted and I miss the flat fore end and the 2oz. trigger and super slick actions and all the other stuff.....

Which brings me back to the title...who sells decent stuff at a fair price???

Hank

Well, I've bought three used benchrest guns in the last year and they've all been at a benchrest match. The last one was a couple of weeks ago at Raton. Actually they've all been at Raton. I've also seen a number at Fort Worth and Dallas gun shows.

BR Central ads and Bob White are both good resources, but best is usually if you can meet who's selling the rifle. Done this way, a prospective buyer can usually see & shoot the rifle.

In "Western Central Carolina" you are fairly close to a number of clubs with benchrest shooters -- Piedmont Gun Club (Rutherfordton), and Rockingham Gun Club (Reidsville). There is also a club in Boone, three in the Charlotte area, and I'm sure I'm missing a few. All the ones I mention have centerifre benchrest shooters.

There are always people selling rifles; either getting out of the sport, or wanting something new. Best time to just walk up & buy is during a match, but some clubs also have a listing of what's for sale, by whom, and a contact number. Since I'm a member at Rockingham, I know it best, and a post/call to Roy Darnell (NBRSA match director) or Roger Haney (Club president) would no doubt lead to a good rifle. I'm sure there are contact people at the other clubs as well.

The Classifieds here???

I have purchased and sold several rifles on the Classifieds on this site with great results. There have been some , what I called well priced rifles, on here lately. From my experience, people have represented their rifles for sale accurately and fairly.

Do us all a favor and buy an HBR rifle. Begin a trend of 6 power shooting in your area of the country. The area needs it. It's more challenging and fun to do.

IMHO, buying a used BR rifle from a dealer you don't know, better figure it has a shot out barrel unless he can solidly document otherwise. Be careful.

Heck Greg in buying a used rifle from a person I do know I would assume the barrel is toast unless I had shot it and seen to the contrary myself.

Action Wear???

Since posting this I have received a lot of very good information on used BR equipment..but I have one more question after reading the replies:

How can you tell if the rifle action is worn??? or does wear of a better quality action ever get to the point it is an issue??

For exampole, is a triple digit s/n CPS action, a 15 year old Stolle Panda, or a 1980 XP100 going to be a problem if you install a new barrel or will it shoot as well as a new name brand action with the same barrel ???

Look for the least expensive BR rifle you can buy and it will be fine for what you have stated you want to do. If all you want to do is to punch paper, almost anything would be ok.

Now, if you even imagine you might want to shoot competatively sometime, buy the best rifle you can find and don't shoot the barrel out just because it shoote so dern good! Actually, a Savage rifle; almost any one of them will do what you have stated you want to do. Some of em shoot as good or better than Custom rifles"

I have 4 Stolle Pandas. Two of them have over 50,000 rounds each. Carl and Tom at Kelblys check the 4 often and update the firing pin springs. They tell me many Pandas have over 125,000 on them and are still in tolerance. I can't speak for other brands.

Hank. Got $3K go to Kelby's.
Got $1K by a Savage Model 12 LRPV. .223 rem. 8-32X Bushnell $ 500.
I have been avg. 180-195(in a downpour). 200 yds. for score.:)
