best .20cal ??????????

20t / 20p

For my next AR build, I'm going with the 20 Practical.

I shoot a
.20-222= 20 Duster
.20 Dasher
.20 PPC
.20 Killer Bee
Had a .20 PPC -150" short.
Working on a 20 Beggs next

Hard to go wrong with the the 20 Vartarg.

The smaller cases with less powder capacity will amaze you. My 20 PPC doesn't run all that much slower than my 20 Dasher and ground hogs don't take 5000 FPS rounds to knock them silly. There is a point of diminishing returns.

For shear fun factor it's my magazine fed 20 PPC!

20 Tac

I've been shootin this caliber for 10yrs now, and basically it comes down to what the heck you want to shoot.
The 20 Tac and 20 Practical are so close to the same its funny. Listen guys, there is no better one than the other here. Either way at some point in time, you had to purchase dies; I read what "Armed in Utah" said about he just had to purchase bushings, and I agree that was the cheapest route and the best move for him since he already had PURCHASED(probably) the bushing die. But I think we all know that no matter what you decide on, your gonna be buying dies, unless you go the 204R route.

Now making 20 Tac---you don't!!! buy the Dakota/Lapua brass (yea a little more than 204R brass, but it will last to 15+ rounds). When you get the brass in hand, just throw a primer in it, powder it, and seat bullet and shoot away.
Then u can either run the brass in a bushing die or FL, whichever you prefer.

Making 20 Tac brass out of any other .223 brass---all u need is to buy a Redding 20 Tac form die and you are good to go all the days end. Doing this with .223 Lapua brass can result in some wrinkled casses, however they iron out upon firing and forming. I've used Winchester and IMI SS109 and IMI Match brass with the form die without any problems and still shooting this stuff.

My thought on the 204 Ruger is that, if u handload to the warm side, I don't see why you couldn't almost touch 3950fps with 40's in 12twist/ 26" barrel.

I can easily reach 3950fps using 40's in 12twist/ 28" Pac-Nor in 20tac
load is 24.6 RL-10x.

H-4198 gave good groups, but the velocity wasn't quite there, however the pressure was though.

Hope this clears some things up, and check out www.saubier.com lots of smiall caliber talk there and I post alot there too.

Ackman: You are digging yourself deeper and deeper into a hole!
First lets make it clear you REFUSE and/or are UNABLE to answer my simple and direct question of you!
WHY won't you do that?
I will ask again, to make you even more embarrassed in an effort to get you to "define" what YOU are actually avoiding!

"If you can't answer a simple question then don't try to insinuate you know better than ANYONE else in that regard!
I will ask you again - "are you saying that with a smaller case and a smaller charge of powder you can produce "faster velocities"?
Man up there bucko and admit your contention is in error or explain yourself"!

Following your bizarre and unsubstantiated "thought process" then why don't folks just purchase Rifles in 221 Remington Fireball caliber and (on your keyboard at least!) shoot them faster than a 220 Swift?

You cite one example of a person who is comparing differing loads of UNKNOWN pressures!
Again the old hot load in one caliber and who knows what load in another comparison is not evidence of anything pertinent - not much reliable evidence there for you to use in your easily disputed contention!
Dance you way around that situation there "Ackman"!
Its time for me to ask you again Ackman do you stand by your bizarre contention that going to a smaller case and a smaller powder charge will produce faster velocities?
I am already laughing at your certain to come avoidance of that question and certain to come immature attempts at personal attacks!
By the way there "Ackman" you also failed to point out where I "demanded" anything of anyone!
More shortcomings on your part!
So in your future posts I suggest you skip the immature attempts at insulting others and either answer the simple questions or shut up!
And don't be tempted to go off on an "efficient" cartridge tangent.
I know all about efficiency in cartridges - that is a seperate subject.
I want to know, how you can get "faster velocity" from a smaller case and a smaller powder charge - and if YOU CAN answer that question then be sure to pass the answer along to Roy Weatherby Jr.!
My suggestion is for you to quit while you are still behind!
Sheesh!
Hold into the wind

This keeps getting funnier. Demands that someone point out where you've demanded something (!!???). You're hopeless. You never took basic "Paying Attention to What You're Reading 101".

So read the posts again. I made no contentions anywhere about what the 204 and 20Pract will or won't do.

Post 3...Armed compares performance of the 204 and 20Pract. in his rifles. Straightforward.
Post 9...You gots to know....tell him to explain.
Post 12... I explain what he was saying.
Post 13....Long blowhard rambling from you.
Post 17....Armed details exactly what he was talking about, backs up everything he said. Very straightforward. Easy to understand.
Post 23....Beasley talks about the same thing. Straightforward. Easy to understand.
Post 24....More long blowhard rambling and the inevitable demands.

Start taking your meds again, go back to therapy. Stop demanding that I justify/prove "assertions" that I didn't make. Read what the guys who shoot these things are saying. Some good information. Answers to what you "gots to know" are there if you'd just pay attention.

wow.....in the middle of a ....

pissin' match.....
I'm no professional....just a seasoned reloader of 36 yrs...learn new things all the time...my interest started with the 204R...after 2500 rds and one throat..I wanted the new to me..20 Practical..so Pac Nor cut it down and rechambered it for me...its been a fun project....even today bustin' dogs @ 450-500 yds with the 20 PT...hearing the smack of the 40 V max at that range even with muffs on...so with approx 3500 rds down this same tube the bbl is still going strong....many p/dogs never made it back to the mound...in the past 14 yrs of dedicated dog bustin'...you learn alot of reloading....ballistics....and holding a 'dog into the wind'...fun sport...I do get my experience in the field behind a rifle watching dogs do flips off the mound...now lets talk maybe about the best LR 6mm varmint cartridge...mine is the 6XC w/8 twist.....Savage/Pac Nor of course...what's yours ??? :)

My trusty 20 Tactical. I had to put a brake on it to calm the violent recoil.

Back Sliding??

Yeah vg, poor you. Poor pathetic keyboard cowboy you....play the same stupid game over and over.

...just when I thought the "new and improved" forum (free of politics and name calling) was working!!!!

Good idea on the brake........

Looks like a Salvage action....who built the bbl ?

You know Salvage rifles are ugly..........

But shoot like no body's business...........:D :D

A 20 VarTarg for me. I bought a Rem XR100 in 204 and shortened and re chambered to 20 VT and couldn't be happier. 35gn Berger at 3650 over 19.2gn H4198 and it is all that I ever thought a rabbit rifle could be. Super accurate and with the best manners.

Hey Adrian, that's a real..........

nice lookin' rifle you got there. I just know it brings the smiles, remembering the good times spent with it.............:D

Tac 20

I see Cooper Arms has a Varmint rifle chambered in the TAC20 cartridge.....what do you guys think about that? Or do you think i can have a custom built for that price?

thanks, for any advice.

Nice rig, really nice! More eye appeal than mine with the Lam Stock. I just had to post a some photos of mine now. This one didn't need a muzzle break, only bumps back about 3/4" in the bags under recoil, the buttstock is full of shot to balance and make it steady for the big Shilen barrel & the Hall B action.

To put my two cents worth in, this is my only 20, and chose it because of the Dakota (Lapua) brass, and Todd twisted my arm a little.

However if money was no object and trust me it is since the divorce, I would own a LRPV in 204, a nice VarTarg in a lighter varmint contour on a custom action, and a 20BR for the top speed in a 9 twist probably. Nothing wrong with the Practiacal, I also have a want/need relationship with it after reading an article on 6mm BR site in an AR varmint barrel combo.

I liked the idea of the 20 Tac because of the 30 degree shoulder angle, longer neck and ready to use high quality brass.

I think the 20 VarTarg should be very accurate from what I read in Todd's book, and the fact that it's physical profile is close to 85% of the 6mm PPC in almost all aspects.
