Benelli M1 auto

A bit of a question certainly far from benchrest?
I have a Benelli M1 auto shotgun was wondering if anybody had ever put a scope on one of these or similar auto shotguns? Is the action ok to tap for a rail?

Cheers Rich.K

Rich, I just pulled one apart to look. The action is thick enough behind the recess for the barrel extension but, pretty thin where recessed for the bbl extension. Brownells lists a DA-MAR mount with a rail that is drilled/tapped as a saddle type to avoid the thinner top of the action. Then there are also the no-drill/tap mounts.

Rich; Most of the mounts I've seen are aluminum, w/a steel pin going through, replacing the factory pin. I have one here, but haven't tried it yet.
Before Winchester bought BRI slugs there was a Benelli made that had a threaded receiver for the barrel, which was non-removeable, and the Benelli receiver had been drilled and tapped for the development of that slug.
I would look at a cantilevered mount, if possible, for a shotgun shooting a steady(er) diet of slugs. The M1, being an aluminum affair may have difficulties w/d&t. The main thing I'd look into on an aluminum receiver and mount, is putting a screw with a nylon insert in the tip, through the forward end of the mount to try to return the mount(and scope) to zero pitch, after the firing/flexing took place. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

955-000-135 is the part number for the weaver base from brownells. I have tapped several benelli's for the slug hunters in minnesota and iowa. Tapped a win 1300 today?

Chaps,

Three spot on replies, thanks very much. I think I will go with the no drill mount form Brownells using the exisiting pin holes. Kyle how much thread depth are you getting when you tap the actions?

Cheers Rich.K

Drill all the way through and flush the screws. The only problem with the saddle mounts is you cant tighten the screw that tight without binding the trigger group.
