Those are "group" targets vs the score targets that rf BR generally shoot. For RF BR check out the ARA, RBA, or IR 50/50 target. Some of those square on targets were for shooting at close range and zeroing for long range(military)

It was explained to me that the square is used as a fixed point of aiming at for group shooting, that way as you shoot you will always have a good point of reference instead of just aiming into the middle of a bullet hole...

So on these targets your POA is the center of the square and your POI is the center of the round target below?

Probably the majority of group shooting is done centering the dot in the "mothball" with the group outside it. The sqare is an old legacy from the past when guys liked to align a crooshair against 2 planes of the dark square.

There was an extensive govt funded study in Finland in the early 1980's, carried in all the major psychiatrist journals, squares vs circles. It was determined by actually letting condemned convicts look at each for one hour -then they were put down and their brains were dissected. The optic nerve was removed and studied. The results were the brains that looked at the squares the optic nerve was longer than the circle looked at optic nerves. The brain can see a square more better as determined by science.

"more better" eh? sounds like something I might write.

Well anyway, can you cite this Finnish study?

Crosshair Alignment

What I have been told is you can use any corner of the square as a 90 degree point of reference to set your cross hairs on as your point of aim, with the center of the circle below the square being the intended point of impact.

I'll have to try it sometime.
