Benchrest competition for smooth bores ?

Has there been a benchrest competition for smooth bores held in the last fifty years ?

If so, how did they fare ?

They are using the same target... no one has been able to hit it yet...:D
 
The last major competition I've heard of between smoothbores and rifles was between Abrams and T-72 tanks in the Iraqi desert. The smoothbores slaughtered the rifles...literally.
For the losers that wasn't behcnrest, it was eternalrest.
 
But the Abrams fudged they used fins on their projectiles. ;)

T-72s have smoothbore guns, not rifled ones. However, T-54s and T-55s (and Chinese copies thereof) formed the bulk of Iraq's tank forces during the First Gulf War. The 100 mm gun on these vehicles was rifled.
 
I would direct you to muzzleblast and the NMRLA website. There are a couple are of large events every year where some of the 'older' technology is shot in competition. I have gotten into shooting some of these awesome blackpowder guns lately. I dont own any smooth bores, mine are rifled. There are not many who shoot these and they are a 'blast.' Just as many if not more variables as 'benchrest.'
Some of my examples, my 60cal RB, underhammer percussion, set for loading, note the starters next to windex, 50lbs in weight

Of course they are, why wouldn't u? Grin, I call it the hobby with a workout. Just moving to clean and load between shots is tough as they are around 50lbs. Try loading, shooting, moving back, clean, load, move back to shoot again and try to remember your hold/sight picture etc to remain consistent. It is fun
 
Tell them about the oversize "ironing board" you use for the shooting bench...I took a year off from modern BR shooting to play the muzzleloader game,I found it interesting also.......However one year was enough for me right now...
 
I feel that the 'ironing board' is a good way for my wife and I to share equipment thus leading to less house clutter. This is also how I sold her on the tablesaw coffee table and the dillon 550 reloader/4 position nut cracker

and the big 69 caliber, projectile is around 1700 grains (maybe a bit much but looks like fun) Mr. Mitchell is the guy who built my scope as seen on my gun in the pics. There is some talk on this board about his scopes.

like all things, they multiply right now I am up to around 4. My slug gun is the one with the scope, projectile around 700 grains, 2 part swaged slug. The RB guns are the one at the bench as shown, 60 cal, the flinter 515 cal and I have another barrel 451 cal.
 
The slug guns are shot for score, from what I understand, unsure of roundball, think score also. I have never been to one of the big shoots at Cody or Friendship. It seems the records on the NRLMA site are 'scored.' (250x etc). I only shoot against myself atm and I lose most of the time!
