I am thinking of getting involved in Benchrest shooting, and I am open and willing to hear all suggestions and recommendation on what actions, barrels, calibers, stocks, scopes, and other equipment I may need to get started. I live in Michigan and there is a gun club near me that shoots IBS, 100/200 yd.

Thank you for your time

It would be a good idea for you to show up at a local shoot and ask questions. I wouldn't jump in just yet and buy a gun and equipment before you know just what you want. You will fing that EVERYONE at your local club will be very eager to help you and there will also be several shooters that will offer you their gun to shoot. Take advantage of that and shoot as many guns as possible. After that, cruise the classifieds and pick up a used BR riflle before you build one. This is the perfect time of the year to buy, the season is nearly over and many will be selling guns and equipment to fund other interests. Be patient.

That sounds like a wise and excellent suggestion. Thank you Joe.

If the local range is IBS, then it is a good chance that they are shooting Score. Contact someone in that club, and find out.

The reason I say this is Benchrest is very specific. The trend in score shooting is slow twist 30 caliber chamberings that are deadly accurate, with the benefit of punching a larger hole in the target.

Don't invest all of your dollars in a 22 rig, or even a 6mm, for score shooting. You will be at a disadvantage.

If they shoot mostly group, then go with a 6PPC, as was said already, there are a multitude of good used rigs out there, sometimes you can pick up a shooters entire package for a fraction of what it would cost new.

Getting a Rifle built can be timely, there are a surprisingly few Benchrest Gunsmiths out there. That is why everybody is always "3 months behind".

New Rifles can be bought from big supply houses such as Bruno Shooting Supply. They build as certain amount of "spec" Rifles through the year for sale, they can be had emmediatly.

But as was said before, get to a match, and see how it is done. This is one case where a picture is worth a thousand words, things that seem foriegn now will suddenly become clear. That, and Benchrest Shooters are always ready to help a newshooter get started on the right track........jackie

When the snow starts to fall and you're confined to indoors you might want to browse through this guide by Benchrest Hall of Fame member Speedy Gonzalez: http://www.benchrest.se/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=51&Itemid=69, and occassionaly visit http://www.6mmbr.com/index.html along with this site.

If you're ready to jump in with both feet, I also recommend reading: Glenn Newick's The Ultimate in Rifle Accuracy, Mike Ratigan's Extreme Rifle Accuracy, and Precision Shooting magazine's The Benchrest Shooting Primer. Further down the road, you might consider joining IBS for $50/yr and receive a year's subscription to their Precision Shooting magazine (normally $37/yr) as part of the membership. Art

Where are you located canis? We can steer you in the right direction to someone that may live near you. There are some VERY good shooters across the state that would be glad to help you out.

+1 Art.
Canis these guys have the answers.
I am on my 3rd rifle. The first 2 were not Benchrest. It has been an expensive 2 yrs.
In the summer we shoot score at my local club. WWCCA is shooting score in the winter. First one this Sunday. 10 am. I will be there. Then I hope to make the Varmint match at Monroe Rifle/pistol. 1pm.
Read 2 of 3 books that Art recommends. :D
I heard Jackie is an expert. And always helpful.
Email Kelby's. They might send you a list of their used guns. They have a lot. Know someone that bought one. Real nice gun. Plan to spend all day at Kelby's. They will walk you through it all. So I was told.
Gives you a good idea what is out there. You can always upgrade later. Just like computers.
And there is nothing wrong with a used gun. As long as it is a good used gun.
I just got a used gun. 3rd owner. Shoots great.:D

To liljoe ...I live in southwestern wayne county.

To zippy06 ...I know WWCCA I used to be a member years ago. You say you will be out there Sunday? At 10 am. Will you be at the 100 or 200 yd range? Maybe I can make it out there.

Canis. Check out their site there is a calender.
Sunday, I will be at the 200y range. Prolly 0830-0900.
I think this is their winter league. Benchrest score match. Bring your gun and about 50 rounds. A front rest and rear rest.
I am not a member. But, I was told no one is turned away.
There are a couple of members on this forum.
