Bases for a Mauser

Apollo

A friend came over with a rifle he just purchased. I believe it is a Mauser. Here is what it has on the sides of the action:
Mod 1908
Deutsche Waffen-und
munitions Fabriken Berlin
B7893 B
Ee (hard to read the E might be an R)
FC SAP R-5

He wants to put new bases on it. There already are 2 holes drilled and tapped for front mounts and 2 for the rear mounts, but I do not know if they came like that, or if the previous owner had a gunsmith put them in.

I tried looking up the info on Midway to find a 2 piece base, but didn't have any luck. He already has a pair of base/ring combos - but they are so high that the scope won't adjust down enough for a 100 yd zero (this is what he told me - I did not shoot or see his target). The scope has to sit high to make clearance for the safety which stick straight up. My suggestion was to get new bases, then buy Burris rings with the inserts to angle the scope downward.

Not sure how to help. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

As you said, the scope has to be mounted high to clear the safety, and maybe to have the bolt handle clear the scope's ocular bell. He should consider installing a custom bolt sleeve with a safety on the side, as well as modifying the bolt handle if necessary. Scopes that are very high not only look bad but shooting is impaired if your cheek is not aligned properly with the stock comb.

This is what he needs for a safety, as for the mounts, did the rear bridge get re-contoured?

Thanks for the info about the safety. I will pass that on.
I do not think the rear part of the action got re-contoured. He took his gun home with him. I'm used to looking up the type and model number and choosing between the options listed. In this case, I can not even find any options.

Jim Kobe does these safeties on an exchange basis for the factory shrouds. They are the Cat's meow. I would definitely not shop Midway for bases and rings. You will be much better going to Brownells. They have an excellent tech line.

Thanks guys. That was the info I needed. I'll pass it on and the owner can make his decisions.
