Barrell blocks

Hey fellas would you guys mind explaining to me what barrell blocks are, and when there needed?

L.G.,
A "barrel block" holds the complete barrel and action in the stock. It clamps on the barrel just forward of the receiver and is usually glued or bolted into the stock. Nothing touches the stock except the lower part of the block. It is a particularly useful means of attaching to the stock when you have a very heavy barrel which may be causing the receiver to bend due to barrel weight. To avoid this problem with heavy barrels, you can alsao bed the first 4 to 6 inches of the barrel to take weight off the receiver. Hope this helps.

As a added note, the vast majority of Rail Guns that are used in Unlimited Benchrest do mount the barrel and action in a barrel block..........jackie

Here are some pictures of a barrel blocked gun.Hopefully you will get the idea of what is being done by looking at them.
A typical barrel screws into the action only a touch more than one inch.In the pictures below the barrels is 1.750 inches in diameter for 36 inches and weighs over 25 pounds. This puts alot of strain on that one inch of threads and the action both.Picture yourself holding a pencil between your thumb and forefinger. Now picture yourself holding a broom handle then a 4x4 piece of wood 6 feet long.Holding the pencil is a piece of cake but the broom handle and the 4x4 would be impossible.
This particular barrel block is 9 inches long.
