Barrel weight removal

I have been over on Lilja web site trying to learn about barrel weights and how much barrel removal it takes to come up with 5oz. The calculations on there program dont equal what i have in hand so i am questioning my input methods. Basically i didnt learn very much! I need to know about how much barrel i need to remove on a HV taper to come up with 5oz. From the muzzle end. My muzzle measures .962. I am 3oz heavy on this rifle in question and i want to make sure i can pass on any scale i may weigh on, so i figure 5oz should do it. My barrel is 24inches long so i should have plenty of length. How much weight do you think there would be in 1" of barrel at .963? Lee

Skeet, I would have to go to my shop and actually weigh a piece.

But a statement you made is a little off. You Rifle does NOT have to pass on any scale, it only has to pass on a scale that has been calibrated with a set of Certified NBRSA or IBS weights.

If a range does not have a set of certifired weights on hand, the weighing of Rifles is meaningless........jackie

Lee,

A 0.963" dia. 6mm barrel weighs about 3.1 oz. per inch.

I dont know about any of that. I suppose i just have to be at 13.5 pounds or under on the scales at the various clubs in which i will be attending. I have a set of cheap postal mail scales that i got from a mail order retailer. They were only 20 bucks or so and they seem pretty accurate. According to my scales i am 3oz heavy on my score rifle.
Greg, thanks for the info. I figured this to be real close. I will remove one inch of this barrel with my lathe and go from there. thank you! Lee

I ran the numbers and Greg is very close to what I got. Round numbers, at muzzle diameter, about 3 oz per in. You should gain a little on that from the taper. I used .280 lb./cu.in.

The simple thing to do is to weigh the barrel, cut a half inch off the muzzle with a bandsaw, weigh it again and determine how much more you need to cut off. Once you have it cut to make weight with a bandsaw, stick the barrel in the lathe and crown it.
