Barrel vise.

What is the best method of securing a rifle barrel in a vise? I have tried ones from Brownell and Midway but can't keep barrel from slipping. The best method so far was 2 pieces of hardwood. Advise greatly appreciated.

I've used target paper wrapped around the barrel; tighten the vise — and no slipping.

without being rude, the vice jaws have to fit the bbl profile or contact will be small and slipping easy.
single layer of paper helps when the bbl fits.

I *very slightly* moisten the contact surface and then use a little rosin (available in the lifetime supply bottle from Brownell's).

And, split the top plates. Enlarge the holes to allow some pivoting to somewhat follow the contour.

Never had a factory barrels that slipped and did not loosen. Support the action with 2x4.

On carbon fiber wrapped barrels, the front top plate is enough to hold the SS shank and torque the action.
