barrel nut removal for Savage 16

a fellow brought me a Savage 16 to rebarrel and as I look at it it has a smooth barrel nut ,how are you guys removing them ?

Had one like that a while back. Put it in my lathe and cut it off!

Now that I think about it I believe I used a high speed cut off tool and made a cut just in front of the reciever.

I was hoping to save the barrel nut . One can imagine my surprise when I grabbed my Savage nut wrench and went HUHH what the hell . Is this Savages idea to keep people from removing barrels?? I could probably use a pipe wrench (not very professional) or try a strap wrench .

I used an action wrench in the nut.

I know several people that use a pipe wrench and replace the nut with a notched nut
