barrel length 6BR 600yds?

Will a 24-25+/- inch 6BR barrel with a 1in8 twist be usable for 600yds? I have a barrel that needs set back and I am trying to decide if this would be to short to shoot the 107 Sierra or 105 Hornady.

Should work just fine...the 6BR is a small capacity case, so the powder will all be burned before it gets to that length, or at least the better part of it. Good shooting.

Barrel length

You should not see any noticable difference (at least not on the target) if you shorten a 6BR barrel from 28 to 25 inches in length. Velocity drop should not be much more than 50-75 fps.

When I did the test for 6mmBR.com, we took a 31" barrel, and cut it back 1 inch till we hit 28 inches. You can read the results over on that web site.

There is enough powder to make use of 28 inches when using the long and heavy 105 grn bullets. Reloader 15 and Varget are about the perfect burn rate to achieve this.

As was said, you will loose some velocity, how much is sometimes dependent on each individule barrel.

The magic upper end load, (and I do mean upper end), seems to be a flat 3000 fps out of a 28 inch barrel. I am pretty sure you can not get that with a 24-25 inch without getting into pressure problems.

But, as was said, the key is accuracy as it appears on the target. If the thing still aggs well, 75 or 100 fps isn't going to make a hill of beans difference.........jackie

I have shot at 600 & 1000 yds with a Modified 6br with fine results using a 23" barrel.

What Jackie said. At 600 yards, Benchrest accuracy takes precedent over velocity or bullet weight or anything else. If you expect to hear your name called during the awards ceremony you'd better have a rifle that is capable of shooting Benchrest size groups, both 5-shot and 10-shot. A good relay will help and may trump everything else.
