All of the major barrel manufacturers produce contours that are designed to use when building either a legal Light Varmint, (10.5 pound) or Heavy Varmint, (13.5 pound) Rifle.

A typical LV taper (#18 at Krieger), starts at about 4 inches of 1.200 diameter at the chamber end with a steady taper down to .820 inch at the muzzle. A typical HV taper starts at about 1.250 at the chamber end and tapers to about .920 at the muzzle.

Gunsmiths can custom fit the weight depending on where they cut the length.

Some shooters experiment with different contours, but most learn that what is inside of the barrel is what's important.

Whilst on the subject of barrel contours what is the maximum diameter barrel diameter you could obtain in the US these days. Is anything around 2 1/2 " remotely possible.
